Probability Theory (first steps)

We now come to a small booklet by E. S. Wentzel titled Probability Theory (first steps).

The back cover of the book says:

The author of this booklet describes in popular language how probability theory was developed and found wide application in all fields of modern science. This book can be considered as an introduction towards a more thorough study of probability theory and is intended for a wide circle of readers.

This book has a translation in Tamil titled நிகழ் தகவுக் கோட்பாடு
(தொடக்கப் படிகள்) thanks to Senthil for helping with this. I do not know about translations in other Indian languages

Problems of Wave Optics

We now come to a small booklet titled Problems of Wave Optics by S. E. Frish. The book starts with history of wave theory and contributions of various people like Huygens, Young, Fresnel, Newton and takes on the theoretical framework which explains the observed phenomena.

This booklet acquaints the reader in a popular form with the basic features of modern wave theory of light. New advances in optics, in particular sources of coherent radiation, lasers, are discussed, and prospects outlined for their application in photography and microscopy.

The booklet is intended for specialists, students school teachers and a wide range of readers interested in problems of theoretical and experimental physics.

This book is a part of a series called as “Knowledge Series” the logo is a at top right corner of cover. I do not know what other books were part of this series, if you know any please let us know.

The book was translated from the Russian by V. Kisin and was first published by Mir in 1976 with  a second reprint in 1982.

You can get the book here.

Why I Am Like Dad?

We now come to a book on genetics titled Why I’m Like Dad? by N. Luchnik.

Why do cats give birth to kittens, lions to lion-cubs, and rabbits to baby rabbits?
Why do human children, too, not only outwardly look like their parents, but also resemble them in character and disposition?
Why are twins as like as two peas or quite different?
Why are some babies born monsters? Can man remake animals and plants to order?
Questions like those are the field of this book. It describes the quests that led to major discoveries in genetics, and the obstacles encountered by researches, and tells about the scientists who study heredity, and how to change it. The author, a prominent biologist himself, takes the reader to research laboratories, farm fields, and hospitals, opening up before him the whole broad field of modern genetics. Why I’m Like Dad received the award of the USSR Society for the Dissemination of Scientific Knowledge (Znaniye) for the best popular science writing in 1967.

Many thanks to gnv64 for this book.

Electrons, Phonons and Magnons

It is a book about the methods of interpreting macroscopic effects,
about the  relationship between solid state physics and quantum
mechanics, about the creation and use of new concepts....
I have also pursued another goal—to "lift the veil" by explaining
how the results are obtained and not restricting the presentation
to an itemization of the results.

We have earlier seen book by M. I Kaganov (and I. M. Lifshits) titled Quasi Particles we now come to another book by the title Electrons, Phonons and Magnons.

Back cover of the book says:

The book introduces the reader to the fascinating world of solid state physics as governed by quantum mechanics. It gives a clear exposition of the dynamics of the crystal lattice (propagation of waves, heat conduction and similar problems), of electric phenomena in crystals in conjunction with the properties of the lattice and of the magnetic properties of the crystals.

The author using almost no formulas, manages to give a complete explanation of the nature of phenomena. An attentive reader will find in this book a lot more than is found on the surface and will appreciate its very personal style.

The book was translated from the Russian by V. I Kissin and was first published by Mir in 1981.

Practical Inorganic Chemistry

In this post we will see a book titled Practical Inorganic Chemistry by O. J. Vorobyoca, K. M. Dunaeva, E. A. Ippolitova, and N. S. Tamm and was edited by V. I. Spitsyn.

Students using the
present textbook will acquaint themselves with procedures of work
in a modern laboratory. The latter include the carrying out of operations
in vacuum, synthesis in non-aqueous solvents, the conducting
of reactions in a gaseous medium (a fluidized bed, “transport” reactions)
or in liquefied gases, photolytic reduction and oxidation, and
the preparation of pure substances (sublimation, recrystallization,
extraction, chromatography, and distillation). Students will acquire
skill in handling glass and quartz ware on standard joints, cryostats,
thermostats, “dry” chambers, and simple measuring instruments.

The present book devotes a lot of space to the synthesis of the
most important inorganic compounds and the chemistry of the
elements. Since the book contains a large number of experiments and
syntheses, they cannot be performed by the students during the time
allotted for practical work, and the authors have divided the laboratory
works of each chapter into two parts. The first describes the
obligatory experiments, and the second, supplementary experiments
and syntheses.

The large number of diverse syntheses in the book enable the instructor
to vary the assignments to the students and thus expand
their chemical outlook.

The book was translated from the Russian by G. Leib and was first published by Mir in 1987.

All credits to the original uploader.

You can get the book here.
