Little Mathematics Library – Complex Numbers and Conformal Mappings

The book, containing a wealth of illustrative material,
acquaints the reader with complex numbers and operations 
on them and also with conformal mappings, that is mappings
which preserve the angles (they are employed in cartography, 
mechanics, physics).

After seeing two books Areas and Logarithms | Remarkable Curves we now come to Complex Numbers and Conformal Mappings by A. I. Markushevich in the  Little Mathematics Library. We will in the future see more books from him.

The book acquaints the reader with complex numbers and
functions of a complex argument (including Zhukovsky’s function as applied to the construction of a wing section). The material is presented in a geometric form. Complex numbers are considered as directed line segments and functions as mappings. To prepare the reader to such an understanding of complex numbers, we begin with a geometric interpretation of real numbers and operations on them. The book is based on a lecture delivered by the author to high-school students. To read the book, the reader need not be acquainted with complex numbers.

It is intended for all those who are
interested in mathematics and primarily for high-school
students, it can also be of use for self-education. For proper
comprehension of the content of the book the reader must posses
high-school knowledge of mathematics.

The book was translated from the Russian by Irene Aleksanova and was first published by Mir in 1982. This book was also part of the Public Lectures in Mathematics – Volume 8 (PLM) which was published in 1960’s. Link below is for the Mir version.

Little Mathematics Library – Calculus of Rational Functions – Shilov

If, however, we restrict ourselves to a comparatively
narrow class of rational functions and utilize the 
illustrative language of graphs, we can present the 
concepts of derivative and integral in a few pages, 
sufficiently accurately and at the same time pithily.

We now come to Calculus of Rational Functions by G. E. Shilov in the  Little Mathematics Library.

The pamphlet “Calculus of Rational Functons” discusses
graphs of functions and the differential and integral calculi
as applied to the simplest class of functions, viz. the rational
functions of one variable. It is intended for pupils of senior
forms and first year students of colleges and universities.

The book was translated from the Russian by V. I. Kisin and was first published by Mir in 1976 with a second reprint in 1982.

Little Mathematics Library – Areas and Logarithms

We now come to Areas and Logarithms by A. I. Markushevich in the  Little Mathematics Library. We have already seen his remarkable book titled Remarkable Curves .

This book offers a geometric theory of logarithms, in
which (natural) logarithms are represented as areas of
various geometrical shapes. All the properties of
logarithms, as well as their methods of calculation, are
then determined from the properties of the areas. The
book introduces most simple concepts and properties of
integral calculus, without resort to concept of derivative.
The book is intended for all lovers of mathematics,
particularly school children.

The book was translated from the Russian by I. Aleksanova and was first published by Mir in 1981 with a second reprint in 1987. This book was also part of the Topics in Mathematics (TiM) and was published by D. C. Heath in 1963, This edition was translated from the first Russian version by Ronald S. Toczek and Reuben Sandler. Little Mathematics Library – Algebraic Equations of Arbitrary Degrees

After a long gap we start again with the Little Mathematics Library series. The first one that we see is Algebraic Equations of Arbitrary Degrees by A. G. Kurosh.

This booklet is a revision of the author’s lecture to high
school students taking part in the Mathematics Olympiad at
Moscow State University. It gives a review of the results and
methods of the general theory of algebraic equations with due
regard for the level of knowledge of its readers. No proofs are
included in the text since this would have required copying almost half of a university textbook on higher algebra. Despite such an approach, this booklet does not make for light reading. Even a popular mathematics book calls for the reader’s concentration, thorough consideration of all the definitions and statements; check of calculations in all the examples, application of the methods described to his own examples, etc.

The book was translated from the Russian by Vitaly Kisin and was first published by Mir in 1977.

Radar Made Easy – Razmakhnin

We now come to Radar Made Easy by M. Razamkhnin. This book is an attempt to explain the working of radar and its applications, leaving out the gruesome mathematics. Though most of the applications that the author talks about are related to warfare. The book has some good drawings as you would expect in a good popular science book.

To-day, radar in one form or another is likely to turn up
everywhere: in the street, at the waterfront, in an under- ground motor-road. By far the widest use of radar is made by the military and scientists. In all of these fields thousands upon thousands of radar sets are at work. Some of them are small enough to be fitted into spectacles, others weigh hundreds of tons .

In this booklet based mostly on Soviet and foreign periodicals
the reader will find a story of radar. It tells, in a simple and informal manner, what radar is, what it does, and how, and why is it that radar has come to playa leading role in the present-day world. The booklet uses not a single mathematical formula; where necessary, pictures come to the reader’s help.

The booklet has been written for a layman interested to know how and where radio and electronics serve man. From it, the reader will learn quite a number of facts, sometimes unexpected, about the capabilities of radar.

The book was translated from the Russian by B. Kuznetsov and was first published by Mir in 1973, this is the second reprint of 1974.

The Riddles of Three Oceans – Kondratov

We now come to a book titled The Riddles of Three Oceans by Alexander Kondratov. As the title suggests the book is about mysteries which are scattered throughout the three major oceans, namely, Atlantic, Pacific and the Indian.

In this book Alexander Kondratov takes a look at some of the blank spaces in man’s knowledge that can be filled in by further evidence obtained from underwater archeology. In the Pacific Ocean these include such riddles as the culture of Easter Island, the origin of the American Indians, the original homeland of the Polynesians and the peopling of Australia. In the Indian Ocean one of the mysteries is how the ancient Dravidian civilisation spread. Among the secrets of the Atlantic are the warm and cold legendary islands of St. Brendan, Antilia and Thule, the extinct tribes of the Canary Islands, and Atlantis, a fascinating mystery that has given rise to a voluminous body of literature.

The author sets forth the main hypotheses that have been advanced to solve these riddles and analyses them from the standpoints of ethnography, linguistics, geology and other sciences. But he does not try to impose any of the hypotheses on the reader. The conclusions he draws are extremely cautious, and in cases where there is insufficient data the question is left open.

This highly interesting book is intended for the general reader. Indeed, no educated person can fail to take an interest in problems that have a direct bearing on the human race.

The book was translated from the Russian by Leonard Stoklitsky and designed by Victor Korolkov. The book was first published by Progress Publishers in 1974.

Matter and Man – Vasilyev, Stanyukovich

We come to a book by M. Vasilyev, K. Stanyukovich titled Matter and Man.

The book talks about the various aspects of matter and how man (humans!) has come to control them and use them. The book thematically explores solids, liquids,  gases, plasma, radiation, fields, gas dynamics and some aspects of cosmology and how can be they used in order to serve mankind.

Man is calculatingly inquisitive. As soon as he discovers a new law of nature he tries to exploit it for his own ends. Having discovered the secret of lightning bolts he uses it to produce electric light. Having learned the laws of river flow he digs irrigation canals and impounds artificial lakes which affect the very climate of whole regions. He has harnessed the power of nuclear fission of uranium and will soon learn to tame the thermonuclear reactions which heat the sun itself. When he discovers the laws of the universe he will surely put thern to work and make them serve him, He will reconstruct planetary systems,
move stars about and regulate their brightness. Man will indeed become the master of the universe, and it will serve him just as terrestrial laws and phenomena are serving
him today.

Though today some of the things said seem to be naive, they were not when they had been said. For example the progress in space exploration, which observers in 1950-60s has predicted did not come through. Many of the things said in this book seem to be too optimistic, considering the current scenario. In the entire book the dominant ideology seems to be to exploit the natural resources for benefit of mankind. This is something which the Science Studies people detest, but at the time when the book was written they were not there. The book truly represents the zeitgeist of that era.

The book was translated from the Russian by V. Talmy and was first published by Peace Publishers (and earlier name for Mir, logo is the same) sometime in 1960s.

Metals and Man – Vasilyev

We come to a book by M. Vasilyev whose book Matter and Man we saw earlier. This book is similarly titled Metals and Man. There is another Vasilyev, namely N. B. Vasilyev, whose book with V.L. Gutenmacher titled Straight Lines and Curves (Mir, 1980) we will see soon, the current copy in circulation is not the Mir edition.

In Metals and Man the author takes a historical tour of different metals. And all the various ways in which the metals have been used to build and aid different structures across cultures.

The book was published by Mir in 1967 and was translated from the Russian by Boris Kuznetsov.
