In this post we will see a wonderful book on mathematics  titled Straight Lines and Curves by N. Vasilyev and V. Gutenmacher.

About the book:

The authors N. B. Vasilyev and V. L. Gutenmacher are professors of mathematics at Moscow University. N. B. Vasilyev works in the field of the application of mathematical methods to biology, while V. I. Gutenmacher works in the field of mathematical methods used in the analysis of economic models.

In addition to their scientific work, they have both written many articles and books for high school and university students, and have worked with the Correspondence Mathematics School, which draws its pupils from all over the Soviet Union. They have worked on the committee organizing the “mathematical olympiad” problem competitions, which have greatly stimulated interest in mathematics among young people in the Soviet Union. They regularly contribute to the magazine “Kvant” (“Quantum”), a remarkable educational magazine devoted to mathematics and physics. This book contains a wealth of material usually found in geometry courses, and takes a new look at some of the usual theorems.

It deals with paths traced out by moving points, sets of points satisfying given geometrical conditions, and problems on finding maxima and minima. The book contains more than 200 problems which lead the reader towards some important areas of modern mathematics, and will interest a wide range of readers whether they be high school or university students, teachers, or simply lovers of mathematics.

The book was translated from the Russian by Anjan Kundu ans was published by Mir Publishers in 1980. It was also republished by Birkhauser in 2004. The link below is for the Mir Edition.

For those who really want to explore the world of mathematics, I would highly recommend using dynamic mathematics software GeoGebra. It is a Free and Open Source Software. Exploring the problems and exercises in this particular book (and of course otherwise also) with help of GeoGebra, has been for me, an exceptionally rewarding experience. This will reveal to you many subtle points and lead you to mathematical depths which you may have not thought of (or could not) diving into.

He is the author of over sixty science fiction books, including some for children, and many have been translated into the languages of peoples of the USSR and foreign languages. They describe the wonderful world of nature, awaken us to the marvels that exist just beyond the thresholds of our own homes, and explain the latest discoveries in biology. The series called “The Animal World” is particularly interesting having been awarded first Prize at a national contest held annually in the Soviet Union by the “Znaniye” society.

This book was translated from the Russian by Pyotr Aleinikov and first published by Mir Publishers in 1988.

This book was on the wanted list of Science for Everyone titles for quite some time.

Think it took me 6 hours today. 3 hours to scan (learnt that 
“custom scan area” works best on on my canon lide 90, since 
it does not have to traverse the whole length), then “Scantailor”,

In this post we will see a book on chemical topology titled Molecules Without Chemical Bonds by I.S. Dmitriev.

In recent technical literature more and more of often one comes across such terms as “topology of a molecule”, ” topological properties”, “topological bonding”, etc. Broadly speaking, topology is a branch of mathematics dealing with the phenomenon of continuity. A more detailed definition would require from the reader a more profound knowledge of many complex mathematical concepts. This book, however, is designed primarily for a chemist. Besides, it is a popular science book (of course, if one regards as popular science not only books of what chemistry makes of timber type). For this reason we shall give here only the most essential data on topology.

Some ten years ago only the few were aware of the existence of molecules without chemical bonds. Nowadays a new scientific discipline, chemical topology, appeared to study them. This science has succeeded in predicting and producing many remarkable chemical compounds (e.g. catenanes whose molecules are interconnected like links of a chain), in defining the electronic structure of molecules more precisely, and so on.

The complicated concepts of chemical topology are presented here in a clear and comprehensible form. The booklet is intended for teachers and university and high-school students majoring in chemistry and mathematics.

We have already seen two books on Lasers by Lev Tarasov, namely Laser Age in Optics and Laser Physics. In this post we will see yet another book on Lasers by him, this one is titled Laser Physics and Applications.

Among the outstanding achievements of science and engineering in the 20th century, the laser occupies by right a major position. First lasers made in 1960 paved the way for the vehement development of laser technology. Today, lasers and laser systems find wide lise in many fields of science and engineering. They are employed in communications systems, computers, navigation equipment, measuring instruments, and in complicated technological processes. Biology, medicine, and various chemical and physical investigations utilize lasers to advantage.

Wide use of lasers in science and technology is due to the specific properties of laser radiation. The laser is a generator of coherent light. Unlike other sources of light, such as incandescent lamps or arc lamps, the laser produces radiation with a highly regular light field, outstanding in its high coherence, monochromaticity and directivity. The discussion of lasers in this book begins with the evaluation of the physics of processes resulting in coherent optical radiation in the laser. This is the subject to Chapter 1. Chapter 2 takes up the classification of lasers and the physical and engineering benefits of various types of lasers. Application of lasers puts in the forefront the control of laser radiation.

This includes not only such aspects of beam control as deflection, scanning and modulation, but also the variation of the regime of oscillation to produce radiation with the desired spatial, temporal, frequency and power characteristics. All these topics are treated in Chapter 3. Finally, Chapter 4 is concerned with diverse applications of lasers in science and engineering.

We now come to Equations of Mathematical Physics by A. V. Bitsazde.

About the book:

The present book consists of an introduction and six chapters. The introduction discusses basic notions and definitions of the traditional course of mathematical physics and also mathematical models of some phenomena in physics and engineering. Chapters 1 and 2
are devoted to elliptic partial differential equations. Here much emphasis is placed on the Cauchy- Riemann system of partial differential equations, that is on fundamentals of the theory of analytic functions, which facilitates the understanding of the role played in mathematical physics by the theory of functions of a complex variable.

In Chapters 3 and 4 the structural properties of the solutions of hyperbolic and parabolic partial differential equations are studied and much attention is paid to basic problems of the theory of wave equation and heat conduction equation.

In Chapter 5 some elements of the theory of linear integral equations are given. A separate section of this chapter is devoted to singular
integral equations which are frequently used in applications. Chapter 6 is devoted to basic practical methods for the solution of partial differential equations. This chapter contains a number of typical examples demonstrating the essence of the Fourier method of separation of variables, the method of integral transformations, the finite difference method, the melthod of asymptotic expansions and also the variational methods.

To study the book it is sufficient for the reader to be familiar with an ordinary classical course on mathematical analysis studied in colleges. Since such a course usually does not involve functional analysis, the embedding theorems for function’ spaces are not included in the present book.

Quantum Theory of Solids – Lifshits (Ed.)

In this post we will see another book in the Advances in Science and Technology in the USSR – Physics series. This one is titled Quantum Theory of Solids and was edited by I. M. Lifshits.

The present compilation includes four articles on various topics, each of which contains an exposition of the present state of art in the most interesting and timely problems of solid-state theory. The authors are physicists who have contributed significantly to this field of science.

It goes without saying that the selection of material to illustrate the achievements in solid-state physics must inevitably be subjective. For  the compilation does not hold works on superconductivity, a problem to which a separate book could be devoted. But we still believe that the articles should be of interest to readers who wish to know what is new in solid-state physics.

Out of the four articles three (1, 2, and 4) were translated by Eugene Yankovsky and one (article 3) was translated by E. Kaminskaya. The book was published by Mir Publishers in 1982.
