About the Book

The book aims at bringing the reader up-to-date with the latest achievements and trends in the physics of laser processes, as well as at providing sufficient information so that the reader can then independently make use of specialized literature in this field. It describes the present state of affairs in the development of laser technology from the point of view of research as well as applications in various branches of industry.

The book was translated from the Russian by Ram S. Wadhwa and was first published by Mir Publishers in 1983.

Quantum Theory of Solids – Lifshits (Ed.)

In this post we will see another book in the Advances in Science and Technology in the USSR – Physics series. This one is titled Quantum Theory of Solids and was edited by I. M. Lifshits.

lifshits-quantum-theory-of-solids

The present compilation includes four articles on various topics, each of which contains an exposition of the present state of art in the most interesting and timely problems of solid-state theory. The authors are physicists who have contributed significantly to this field of science.

It goes without saying that the selection of material to illustrate the achievements in solid-state physics must inevitably be subjective. For  the compilation does not hold works on superconductivity, a problem to which a separate book could be devoted. But we still believe that the articles should be of interest to readers who wish to know what is new in solid-state physics.

Out of the four articles three (1, 2, and 4) were translated by Eugene Yankovsky and one (article 3) was translated by E. Kaminskaya. The book was published by Mir Publishers in 1982.

First Aid – Buyanov

In this post we will see First Aid by V. M. Buyanov

buyanov-first-aid

First aid is a combination of the emergency medical measures used in case of sudden illness or accident. The first aid rendered on the spot or as the victim is being transported to medical facilities may vary and is classified as follows:
(1) unskilled first aid rendered by a layman who often has none of the necessary means or medicines;
(2) qualified first aid (before the arrival of a doctor) rendered by a specially trained medical worker (medical technician”, nurse, laboratory or dental technician);
(3) first aid rendered by a doctor who has the necessary instruments, apparatus, medicines, blood and blood substitutes, and so on at his disposal.
The textbook deals with general concepts and essentials of First Aid in various accidents and sudden illnesses. General problems discussed in the book include the concepts of asepsis and antisepsis, the principles of applying bandages and basic aspects and methods of resuscitation. First Aid in haemorrhages, wounds, injuries to the soft tissues and bones, electric shock, heat- and sun-stroke, poisoning, acute surgical and non-surgical diseases, and emergency labour are dealt with in detail.

The book was translated from the Russian by Elena Koltsova and was first published by Mir Publishers in 1985.

The World Is Built On Probability – Tarasov

YOU WON'T REGRET READING THIS BOOK

tarasov the world is built on probability
We now come to much awaited book by Lev Tarasov The World Is Built On
Probability.

And this post also is the 200th post on Mirtitles!
Thanks to all who helped and encouraged!!

From the Back Cover:

This text is divided into two major parts.  The aim of the first part
is to convince the reader that the random world begins directly in his
or her own living room because, in fact, all modern life is based on
probability. The first part is on the concept of probability and
considers making decisions in conflict situations, optimizing queues,
games, and the control of various processes, and doing random
searches.

The second part of this text shows how fundamental chance is in nature using the probabilistic laws of modern physics and biology as
examples. Elements of quantum mechanics are also involved, and this
allows the author to demonstrate how probabilistic laws are basic to
microscopic phenomena. The idea is that the reader, passing from the
first part of the book to the second one, would see that probability
is not only around us but is at the basis of everything.

The Russian edition ran into 230,000 copies and is sold out.

YOU WON’T REGRET READING THIS BOOK

The book was translated from the Russian by Michael Burov and was
first published by Mir Publishers in 1988.

Thanks to Karen for getting this book from Amazon of Amerika (and I had to pay heftily in U$D, but that’s okay, I think, for a book like this). It is pretty ironic that we have now to get Soviet books from Amerika by paying in U$D.

Occasionally, some of your visitors may see an advertisement here.

Now, you will be seeing ads in the posts, by WordPress, which I do not like personally. For this particular reason, we may shift to a different server. They are asking for 30 U$D per year to keep it ad-free. With some more money, I think it is better to migrate to our own.

Harnessing The Sun – Borisov, Pyatnova

We now come to Harnessing The Sun (Stories about semiconductors) by Y.Borisov, I.Pyatnova.

harnessing-the-sun-borisov-pyatnova  This book is about solar energy. It takes you on a journey in which
we explore different ways involving semiconductor technology. in
which this abundant form of energy could be utilised. The book was
written in an era when semiconductor technology was in its nascent
form. It describes the physical basis of semiconductor devices with
no formulae, but relying on analogies and models. It talks about
devices and mechanisms which belong to the future. For example a
solar powered satellite, which is the norm now. Lastly, it is about
coming of the solar age, which many of us are looking forward to
belong to….

The Space Age – Shkolenko

In this post we will see The Space Age by Yuri Shkolenko

space age

The author, Yu. A. Shkolenko, is a doctor of philosophy and a journalist. In his book he has com-bined reflections on the fundamental processes occurring in the space age with a lively description of the everyday, practical aspect of cosmonautics. He takes the reader into the cabin of a spaceship, into the living module of an orbital station, shows him the experiments performed by the cosmonauts, and then offers him a glimpse, through the porthole, of the earth and other nearby planets, and of worlds unimaginably remote. As a result, the reader who has never been in space and is unlikely ever to go there, has nonetheless the opportunity to acquire a cosmic view of the world and, rising above his ‘earth-bound’ daily life, can form a new concept of his place and role in the Universe and on earth and appreciate the need for lofty moral principles and humane forms of social existence.
