Nikolai Gogol’s The Government Inspector is a satirical comedy that exposes the corruption and incompetence of provincial Russian officials. The plot revolves around a case of mistaken identity when a low-ranking civil servant, Khlestakov, is mistaken for a powerful government inspector by the local officials of a small town. Fearing the inspector’s arrival to investigate their misconduct, the officials desperately try to bribe and flatter Khlestakov, who exploits their naivety and greed. Through this farcical situation, Gogol critiques the widespread corruption, hypocrisy, and moral decay in Russia’s bureaucracy.
