A New Method In The Theory Of Super– Conductivity by N. N. Bogoliubov; V. V. Tolmachev; D. V. Shirkov

In this post, we will see the book A New Method In The Theory Of Super– Conductivity by N. N. Bogoliubov; V. V. Tolmachev; D. V. Shirkov.

About the book

The present work is an extension of a new method in the theory of superconductivity recently suggested by one of the authors.
We calculate the energy of the superconducting ground state using Frohlich’s Hamiltonian, as well as the one-fermion and collective elementary excited states. It is shown in this way that the final formulas recently obtained by Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer for the ground state and the one-fermion excited states are correct in the first approximation. The physical picture of the phenomenon is found in some ways to resemble more closely that described by Schafroth, Butler, and Blatt.
We analyze in detail the role of the Coulomb interaction between the electrons in the theory of superconductivity.
We treat a system of fermions with a fourth-order interaction Hamiltonian and establish the criterion for its superconductivity.
The original Russian text, from the V. A. Steklov Institute of Mathematics and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, was published by the Academy of Sciences USSR Press in 1958.

The Electronic Theory Of Heavily Doped Semiconductors by V. L. Bonch-Bruyevich

In this post, we will see the book The Electronic Theory Of Heavily Doped Semiconductors by V. L. Bonch-Bruyevich.

About the book

The current interest in solid state theory is, in the main,
the result of confluence of two factors: recent progress in the
problem of many bodies in quantum-statistical mechanics, and
demands of practical semiconductor physics occasioned, in
turn, by the ever increasing use of solid state devices in science
and technology.
Professor Bonch-Bruyevich has rendered a real and welltimed
service in pulling together the available information on
heavily doped semiconductors, because the problems associated
with these materials are among the most pressing in modern
applied and theoretical physics. The reader will find here a
detailed review of the many-electron approach to the theory of
doped semiconductors, as well as a systematic exposition of
the many studies done in this area (much of it by the author and
his students). Some of the interesting topics covered are the
energy spectrum of heavily doped semiconductors, pulse distributions
in them, as well as screening effects and absorption
of electromagnetic waves. The necessary mathematical machinery
of the theory is explained simply and concisely.
It is hoped that the book will prove of value not only to
specialists in the field, but also to a wider group of solid-state
theoreticians and experimentalists.

The Topology Of The Calculus Of Variations In The Large by L A. Ljusternik

In this post, we will see the book The Topology Of The Calculus Of Variations In The Large by L A. Ljusternik.

About the book

In the present paper we investigate the homological properties of functional spaces in connection with the estimation of the number of solutions of the corresponding variational problems. These properties are closely related, on the one hand, to previous work of Moscow mathematicians on topological methods in variational problems, and on the other hand to the investigations of the Moscow topological school on the homology theory of abstract spaces. In a certain sense this paper constitutes a synthesis of both directions of the Moscow topological school.

Algebra Distractivă by I. I. Perelman (Romanian)

In this post, we will see the book Algebra Distractivă by I. I. Perelman (Algebra for Entertainment in Romanian).

About the book

The book was translated from Russian and was illustrated by . The book was published in by Publishers.

Geometry for Entertainment – Yakov Perelman

In this post, we will see the book Geometry for Entertainment by Yakov Perelman. This is a new English translation of the book from the original Russian published in 1950.

About the book

Geometry for Entertainment is written both for friends of mathematics and for those readers from whom many attractive aspects of mathematics have somehow been hidden.

More importantly, this book is intended for those readers who studied (or are currently studying) geometry only at the blackboard and therefore are not used to noticing familiar geometric relationships in the world of things and phenomena around us, have not learnt to use the acquired geometric knowledge in practise, in difficult cases of life, on a hike, in a bivouac or front-line situation.

To arouse the reader’s interest in geometry or, in the words of the author, “to inspire a desire and cultivate a taste for its study is the objective of this book.”

Release Notes

Yakov Perelman’s books always have had a special place in my heart. Several of his classic works are translated, though this one was not. This was a rather ambitious first project of translating an entire book, I was not sure if I could complete it in a reasonable time frame. To my own surprise the project got completed in little over a month: first commit on 25 April and last on 30 May 2024. I took help from several online translators for the translations. I did learn to read a bit of Russian in the process. 🙂

Hopefully there are no major blunders in the translation. Please do let me know if you find any errors either in the translation or the mathematics.

Though I have credited the link on the Internet Archive (IA user Philipp Zanko aka Russian Lutheran), I must thank the original scanner who made this file available (if it was not Russian Lutheran). The processing of these scans was done with GIMP (for selection and editing) and Inkscape (for vector pdf conversion). The final file size is slightly larger (~ 55 M) primarily due to the heavy illustrations. They were converted to vector pdf for the book from the original scans.

I have use LuaLaTeX engine for compilation and Linux Libertine font for the book. The typesetting in LaTeX also provided several challenges which were sorted through expert help at tex.stackexchange. I have used a square profile for the book with wide margin which allows for a nicer reading.

The book is released with an open but a restrictive license, CC By NC SA. We might go for a print version of the book (though others are still pending ikik), this step is towards that goal.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the outcome, and it gives me great pleasure to share it with you. I hope you enjoy reading it too. I am optimistic that this is first of many translations of to come. Do wish me luck!

Damitr Mazanav – “The Mitr”

PS: An electronic version of Astronomy for Entertainment updated with all the recent discoveries in astronomy is in the pipeline, hopefully we should see its release in next couple of months. Also, Irodov’s Fundamental Laws of Mechanics and Basic Laws of Electromagnetism are about ready (figures remain to be redrawn).

Update/Edit: 01 June 2024

Apparently the book has been taken down from Internet Archive with allegations that I have “copied” verbatim from another English translation of the book. Frankly, I was not even aware of the “other ” translation. One of the allegations is that since I don’t know how to read Russian hence I cannot translate. But this is exactly where online translators come in. Without them I wouldn’t have dared to touch this project.

Anyway here are the screenshots of how the book was translated from scratch page-by-page, para-by-para.  I have a complete logs from page one to last page. Not sure what else can I do to convince someone that this translation was done my me and not “copied” from somewhere else.

Also attaching the Russian alphabet chart I created to “read” Russian.

And you can always check the git repo for how the typesetting of the book was done. But it seems some nefarious intent is there to stop the release of the book to the public.

We have challenged the removal with these proofs Lets see how it goes!

(For now the link has been updated)

Tables Of Spectral Lines Of Neutral And Ionized Atoms by A. R. Striganov; N. S. Sventitskii

In this post, we will see the book Tables Of Spectral Lines Of Neutral And Ionized Atoms by A. R. Striganov; N. S. Sventitskii.

About the book

Born in the Kalinin region in 1907 and a graduate of Moscow State University, Prof. Striganov currently heads the Atomic Spectroscopy Laboratory at the I. V. Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy and is a member of the Committee on Spectroscopy of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His research focuses on methods of atomic emission spectrum analysis, optical spectra studies, hyperfine structure of heavy element spectra, and spectroscopic diagnosis of plasmas.

The original Russian text was published by Atomizdat in Moscow in 1966 and has been updated by the authors for this edition. Last-minute additions and corrections have been incorporated into the tables for convenience, prioritizing content over typographic aesthetics. The tables of Spectral Lines of Neutral and Ionized Atoms were first published in Moscow in 1966, and for this Plenum Press edition, corrections have been made, and additions based on journal articles have been included. Notably, additions have been made for spectra such as Li, C I, NI, N IV, and N V.

Previously neglected spectra, like those of N IV, N V, 0 IV, 0 V, and 0 VI, have now been studied more extensively in the laboratory. The American edition of the book incorporates precise values for these spectra, drawing from recent comprehensive papers refining the system of energy levels and expanding the classified lines in various regions of the spectrum. While retaining certain lines from earlier sources, the authors calculated wavelengths based on the refined energy levels. The book aims to provide useful data on the spectra of 22 elements for physicists and engineers.

Foundations Of The Theory Of Plasticity by L. M. Kachanov

In this post, we will see the book Foundations Of The Theory Of Plasticity by L. M. Kachanov.

About the book

This book is based on lectures on the theory of plasticity delivered by the author at the Mechanics-Mathematics Faculty of the University of Leningrad. The author has not attempted to provide an exhaustive treatment of the entire theory of plasticity. The book primarily focuses on the plastic deformation of metals at normal temperatures, particularly in relation to questions of the strength of machines and structures. Its main objective is to offer a straightforward explanation of the fundamental equations of plasticity theory and the most well-developed methods for solving them, as well as to discuss issues characterizing the special nature of the plastic state and the variety of mechanical problems involved.

The second edition has undergone significant revisions to reflect important developments in the theory in recent years. More emphasis has been placed on yield surfaces and the associated yield law, and the chapters on plane stress and the axisymmetric problem have been expanded. The section on extremum principles and energetic methods of solution has been extensively rewritten. Additionally, a new chapter on the theory of shakedown, which is significant in understanding the role of varying loads in the onset of rupture, has been included. Progress in the model of a rigid-plastic body in dynamic problems over the last decade has led to some additions in Chapter XI.

To prevent the course from being overloaded with unnecessary details, some of the more difficult problems have been omitted from the second edition, and the chapters on the stability of equilibrium and composite plastic media have been abbreviated.

It is assumed that the reader is acquainted with the basic concepts of strength of materials and the theory of elasticity. To facilitate study, passages that may be omitted on first reading have been indicated in small type or marked with asterisks.

The list of references is not exhaustive. Special lists are provided to assist in navigating the extensive literature on the theory of plasticity, which includes books and review articles containing supplementary references.

The author acknowledges readers who pointed out defects in the first edition and expresses gratitude to A.A. Vakulenko, A.I. Kuznetsov, V.I. Rozenblyum, and G.S. Shapiro for their valuable comments on the manuscript. A.I. Kuznetsov also reviewed the proofs, and the author extends sincere thanks to him for a number of important corrections.

Translation from the second revised edition into English was provided by Multilingua Scientific Translations.

Credits to the original scanner, this is a cleaned optimised scan.
