Le présent ouvrage développe l’une des méthodes les plus universelles et les plus effectives de résolution des équations elliptiques: la méthode des différences finies.

Les auteurs se penchent ici essentiellement sur la construction d’approximations discrètes des équations et conditions subsidiaires pour des problèmes types de physique mathématique. On se limitera à l’étude des problèmes correspondant à des équations et systèmes d’ordre deux cl quatre., en mettant un accent particulier sur ceux qui présentent un intérêt pratique immédiat. Pour cotte raison on a jugé opportun de poser de nombreux problèmes de physique mathématique (chap. 1), de les mettre en équation avec des conditions aux limites.

Cet ouvrage a son origine dans les cours professés par les auteurs aux élèves des facultés de mécanique-mathématiques et de physique ainsi qu’à la faculté de calcul numérique et de cybernétique de l’Université de Moscou. Il s’adresse à un largo éventail de lecteurs et peut servir de manuel dans l ’étude des méthode discrètes de résolution d’équations de physique mathématique. L’exposé simple et systématique ne suppose au lecteur aucune connaissance des schémas discrets.

La présente monographie traite de la hase théorique d’une méthode effective d’intégration numérique des systèmes d’équations quasi linéaires aux dérivées partielles du type hyperbolique et illustre l’application de cette méthode à la résolution d’un bon nombre de problèmes portant sur la dynamique des gaz instationnaire, sur l ’aérodynamique externe et interne ainsi que sur certains autres domaines de la mécanique des milieux continus.
Les auteurs espèrent que la monographie présente un intérêt
pour un vaste public de chercheurs, d’étudiants et de stagiaires du troisième cycle se spécialisant dans le domaine des méthodes numériques et de leur application aux problèmes de la mécanique des milieux continus.
Les auteurs de la monographie ou bien sont les créateurs de la méthode ou bien ils ont beaucoup contribué à son développement et son application. Le livre est divisé en deux parties. La première partie comportant quatre chapitres traite de la base théorique de la méthode. La seconde partie du livre comprenant trois chapitres illustre les possibilités de la méthode sur l’exemple de la résolution de plusieurs problèmes relevant de la gazodynamique bi- et tridimen­sionnelle, stationnaire et instationnaire.

Plasma physics, the study of highly ionized gases, possesses exceedingly interesting properties that are being increasingly applied to the solution of important problems of modern technology and applied sciences. Thus the basic properties of plasma are of major interest to the general reader. However, most present-day books employ extremely complex mathematical tools and require a good preparation in modern theoretical physics.

This book attempts to interpret the fundamentals of plasma physics in a manner understandable to a reader with a highschool knowledge of mathematics and physics. This does not imply, however, that the material is presented in a predigested form—for assimilation without thought. The book discusses not only the various plasma processes but also the methods of analysis of such processes. By becoming familiar with these methods, the reader will be able to attain a genuine understanding of the physical significance of the phenomena involved.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Lev A. Arzimovich is the Director of the Plasma Physics Division of the Institute for Atomic Energy in Moscow. In this job he has assumed the position of the late Dr. Kurchatov who was, until his death a few years ago, considered one of the world’s leading authorities on thermonuclear problems.

Academician Arzimovich is a full member of the Academy of Sciences (U.S.S.R.) and a member of its Presidium. He is the foremost Soviet plasma physicist and one of the acknowledged world authorities in this field.

In this novel we see a young man madly in love with a girl from a moderately poor family. This girl falls in love with a very aristocratic prince– a man without principles, but charming in his childish egotism– extremely attractive by his sincerity, and with a full capacity for quite unconsciously committing the worst crimes toward those with whom life brings him into contact. The psychology of both the girl and the young aristocrat is very good, but where Dostoyevsky appears at his best is in representing how the other young man, rejected by the girl, devotes the whole existence to being her humble servant and again his own will become instrumental in throwing her into the hands of the aristocrat.

Le présent ouvrage sur les fondements de la radiotechnique statistique est consacré aux questions d’analyse probabiliste des systèmes radiotechniques. Cet ouvrage est né de la révision fondamentale de la seconde édition, complétée et méthodi­quement améliorée, de l’ouvrage cité ci-dessus Théorie des processus aléatoires et ses applications radiotechniques. En changeant le titre, l’auteur a voulu souligner non seulement une différence de principe dans le plan de l’ouvrage faisant ressortir les questions relatives à la synthèse statistique auxquelles est maintenant consacré un volume séparé (le second volume du présent ouvrage), mais surtout le fait que la radiotechnique moderne est essentiellement statistique. Il est évident que tous les aspects de la question n’ont pu être traités dans l’ouvrage, celui-ci étant presque exclusivement consacré aux méthodes mathématiques de la radiotechnique statistique laissant de côté les méthodes de la physique. Il nous a même paru parfois nécessaire de sacrifier la plénitude, la généralité et la rigueur des méthodes mathématiques pour atteindre notre but essentiel qui était de donner à l’ingénieur et au chercheur l’appareil analytique dont il a tant besoin.

In this book we will endeavor to demonstrate that although biochemical or photochemical reactions leading to the formation of products entering into the chemiluminescence reaction are not the same in different systems, the final stages of the process, ending with the luminescence of a quantum, have many features in common and only their comparison in a study of different systems
makes possible an understanding of many very important characteristics of the luminescence mechanism. In accordance with this idea the author has striven /4. not only to demonstrate the widespread occurrence of ultraweak luminescence in biological systems, but also most importantly to consider the biochemical reac­tion mechanisms facilitating the process and the actual transformation of the chemical reaction energy into molecular excitational energy; in other words,
we have attempted to approach the problem of ultraweak luminescence from the biochemical and biophysical points of view.
