About the book

Konstantin Dmitrievich Ushinsky (1824-1870) was an outstanding Russian pedagogue and a writer o f delightful stories for children, whose works have been included in Russian literary readers for over a century.Ushinsky’s interesting tales give children an insight into the world about them and lead them to compare, to draw conclusions and generally, to think. Children like them and remember them. As pedagogue and writer Ushinsky tried by means of his stories to inculcate in his readers a taste for worthwhile occupations, to develop their spirit of enquiry and lead them to the love of nature. Palace And Prison ( Library Of Soviet Literature) by Olga Forsh

In this post, we will see the book Palace And Prison ( Library Of Soviet Literature) by Olga Forsh.

About the book

“Pending special decree”— these cold and heartless words determined the fate of Mikhail Beideman, Russian revolution ary, and one of the noblest men of his time.
Youth’s hopes and dreams, love, friendship, and human dignity were all smothered without trial or jury at a single ruthless stroke, bringing in its wake despair and insanity. “Attention, dear readerl This special decree was never issued!” Sergei Rusanin, Beideman’s childhood friend and witness to the tragedy exclaimed. The fate of Mikhail Beideman,
Dmitry Karakozov and other actual historical characters is tightly interwoven with the fate of Sergei Rusanin, whose soul was tortured by a feeling of guilt throughout his long life, of Vera, faithful to Mikhail until her death, and of many others. “History has swept all into the grave, but it has not for gotten anything,” is the novel’s theme.

Olga Forsh, the oldest living Soviet writer, had the honour of opening the Second All-Union Congress of Soviet Writers in December, 1954 She earned this right through her nearly half-century’s services to Art y all that was best in the culture of the old society… to determine my goal and see more clearly the problems confronting me in my work on the historical novel. In my creative searchings I have attempted to show history truth fully, to bind the interests of art with the revolutionary ideas of modern times. My preoccupation with art and famous artists and architects is indicative of my desire to find a solution to the creative problem of the unity of life and art. . .
“The truth of the new way of life” came to Olga Forsh when she was already a mature writer with an established world outlook. This new way of life swept her up so forcefully that she found she could not but dedicate herself to it completely.

The book was translated from Russian and was published in 1958 by Foreign Languages Publishing House.

Lectures In Geometry Semester 3 Volume 1 Smooth Manifolds by M. Postnikov

In this post, we will see the book Lectures In Geometry Semester 3 Volume 1 Smooth Manifolds by M. Postnikov.

About the book

This book is actually Semester 3 of my Lectures in Geometry. It starts a new subject, however, and is there fore independent of the previous two semesters.
The book has two major features that distinguish it from other textbooks on elementary smooth manifold the ory. Firstly, a lot of space is allotted to topological dimensional theory, the most geometry-oriented branch of general topology, and an acquaintance with it will bring joy to lovers of elegant mathematical constructions which provide deep insights. Secondly, I’ve ventured, in this elementary course, to present the basic notions of the theory of spectral sequences, a tool whose power and significance is becoming increasingly clear in current studies. This is done without first expounding general (co)homology theory .
The textbook ns intended as a normal course presented at two lectures a week. The number of lectures (29) arises because although the winter semester formally contains 18 weeks, in practice it is impossible to deliver more than 11 to 15 weeks of lectures. The course can be used, however, even if the curriculum assigns only one or one and a half lectures a week (11 to 15 and respectively 16 to 22 lectures).
The problems in this book are mainly quite trivial and intended exclusively for a reader to test himself. Some more difficult problems are given in small print. Auxili ary material on algebra or calculus is also given in small print.

The book was translated from Russian by Vladimir Shokurov was published in 1989 by Mir Publishers.

You can get the book here.

PS: Many thanks to the Anonymous commentor for the link to the book. This book is rather a rare one which I have not seen personally in all these years.

Choose The Right Word by V. D. Ruderman

In this post, we will see the book Choose The RIght Word by V. D. Ruderman.

About the book

(A BOOK CONTAINING EXPLANATIONS OF WORDS FREQUENTLY CONFUSED BY RUSSIAN STUDENTS OF ENGLISH, ILLUSTRATIONS, AND EXERCISES)
The purpose of this book is to help Russian students of English to avoid typical mistakes due to the difference between some Russian words and their English equivalents.
In analysing the meaning of the words, not all their connotations have been dealt with but only those which are most frequently confused. At first glance this book may seem to be a work on synonyms. However, this is not quite so. The words included in this work are con fused by Russian students of English because there is only one Russian term for two or more English ones, the latter being either synonyms, or words uninterchangeable, even antonyms, as in the case of to teach— to study, to come—to go (generally translated into Russian as ymm and hath).
This book is recommended to students in the second year of foreign language institutes or English language faculties of pedagogical institutes. It consists of 40 groups of words, which are divided into two parts: elementary and advanced. Part I consists of the simpler, everyday words; part II consists of words generally studied later.

The book was translated from Russian (by ??) and was published in 1961 by Foreign Languages Publishing House.
