The aim of scientists working in planetary cosmogony is to explain the fundamental structural features of the solar system, including the structure and evolution of Earth and other celestial bodies, starting from a single point of reference. Soviet science is making significant progress towards this goal. In recent years, thanks to the efforts of Otto Schmidt, a member of the U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences, and his team, a theory on the origin of Earth and the planets has been established. This theory, along with related issues concerning the Earth’s internal structure and evolution, is the focus of this book.
