Amphibian is a Soviet-era science fiction novel by Alexander Belyaev, also known as “Amphibian Man.” The story follows Ichthyander, a young man surgically altered to live underwater with gills. Raised by his scientist father, Ichthyander navigates the complexities of life both underwater and on land, facing conflicts with those who seek to exploit his abilities. The novel explores themes of humanity, ethics in scientific experimentation, and the tension between progress and morality, all set against the backdrop of the mid-20th-century Soviet scientific and social landscape.
