Viktor Davydovich PEKELIS, member of the Waiters’ Union and Journalists’ Union of the USSR, was one of the first in this country to write popular-science literature on a then burgeoning new field of knowledge, cybernetics, later to b e c om e the key theme for several of his book s, including a few collected volumes o f contributions by major Soviet and foreign cyberneticians. Two of V. Pekelis’ books, CYBERNETICS TO Z, and CYBERNETIC MEDLEY, had between them over thirty editions published within a few years in the USSR and abroad. Viktor Pekelis is a prize-winner of Soviet national contests for the best works of popular-science literature in all, he has authored over 30 books and collected volumes.

The works of I. V. Michurin. both his complete works and
various miscellanies, have been published in many editions in
the Russian language.
Taking into account the enormous world-wide interest in
the teaching of I. V. Michurin, especially in connection with the
work of the session of the Lenin Academy of Agricultural
Sciences of the U.S.S.R. held in July-August 1948, where
Academician Lysenko’s report “On the Situation in Biological
Science,” was discussed, the Foreign Languages Publishing
House considers it timely to publish selected works of I. V. Michurin,
so as to afford the foreign reader an opportunity to
acquaint himself with them.
The present volume inoludes a part of Michurin’s theoretical
and methodological works, pomological descriptions of a number
of varieties bred by him and a series of articles reflecting the
great public activity of this remarkable scientist.
For the convenience of the readers the articles are arranged
according to theme; within the thematic sections they are given
in chronological order.
