Theory Of Automatic Control – Aizerman

In this post, we will see the book Theory Of Automatic Control by M. A. Aizerman.

About the book

This book is based on lectures which the author has given, over the last 10 years and longer, to scientific workers and engineers at a number of local scientific research institutes, design offices and factories in Moscow. His listeners were not specialists in the field of automatic control. They had had much experience of work in other spheres of technology and had mastered only the technology of control. Being convinced of the need to know the theory of automatic control, if only its essentials, in order to design and build controllers, they asked him to select material from the vast amount which has been accumulated in control theory, and to include in the lectures only what was most important for practical applications. In carrying out this request it is quite possible, of course, that the author has made mistakes in his selection of material. He has proceeded from his own experience, and the experience and advice of his listeners, but his opinions, habits and tastes could not but affect the content of the lectures. Only time and experience of practical applications enable us to separate basic ally what is essential from what is secondary. The book is concerned with the theory, and not the technology, of control. The basic introduction to controllers in the first chapter is therefore long enough only for the following chapters to be understood. The reader is expected to be familiar with the theory of the Laplace and Fourier transform. It is explained in Appendix 1 sufficiently for the reader who is not familiar with it to understand the book. Examples and some minor explanations have been put in small print, and may be omitted at a first reading.

The book was published in 1963.

The Theory Of Matrices (Volumes 1 and 2) – Gantmacher

In this post, we will see the book The Theory Of Matrices (Volumes 1 and 2) by F. R. Gantmacher.

About the book

The matrix calculus is widely applied nowadays in various branches of mathematics, mechanics, theoretical physics, theoretical electrical engineering, etc. However, neither in the Soviet nor the foreign literature is there a book that gives a sufficiently complete account of the problems of matrix theory and of its diverse applications. The present book is an attempt to fill this gap in the mathematical literature.
The book is based on lecture courses on the theory of matrices and its applications that the author has given several times in the course of the last seventeen years at the Universities of Moscow and Tiflis and at the Moscow Institute of Physical Technology.
The book is meant not only for mathematicians (undergraduates and research students) but also for specialists in allied fields (physics, engineering) who are interested in mathematics and its applications. Therefore the author has endeavoured to make his account of the material as accessible as possible, assuming only that the reader is acquainted with the theory of determinants and with the usual course of higher mathematics within the programme of higher technical education.

The books were published in 1959.

You can get the Volume 1 here.

You can get the Volume 2 here.

Twilight – A Study In Atmospheric Optics – Rozenberg

In this post, we will see the book Twilight – A Study In Atmospheric Optics by G. V. Rozenberg.

About the book

In this book the reader will find the twilight process treated as an op tical phenomenon and as a tool for upper-atmosphere research. Our under standing of twilight has advanced considerably over the past 30 years. The acquisition mainly of descriptive material through rudimentary observing tech niques has now given way to purposeful quantitative research which exploits every facility of modern experimental technology. And the frankly specula tive arguments that had widely prevailed have been replaced by theory, de veloped in detail and tested experimentally, so that various aspects of the twilight phenomenon can now be treated from a rigorous mathematical stand point to yield much valuable data on the structure of the atmosphere. But al though these results have furnished a fairly comprehensive understanding of twilight, and have in fact established that the twilight method can be applied within certain limits for sounding the atmosphere, they remain scattered through papers in many different journals. It is therefore opportune now to collect the results and examine them from a unified viewpoint.
The author has by no means attempted an exhaustive review of all twi light research —of the earlier work in particular. This book aims to outline the current status of the problem. Considerable space is devoted to ideas that the author has developed in recent years at the Atmospheric Optics Laboratory of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, USSR Academy of Sciences. He has often reported this material verbally and much of it has been incorporated in published papers, but the results are here presented for the first time in com plete form, together with certain data from experimental studies of the twilight sky conducted at the Atmospheric Optics Laboratory over the past few years. As is customary, omission of references to the literature indicates that the material is original.

Translated from the Russian by Richard B. Rodman and was published in 1966.

Lev Tarasov – The World is Built on Probability (LaTeX version)

In this post we will see the book Lev Tarasov’s The World is Built on Probability  in completely digital version typeset using LaTeX!

About the book

This text is divided into two major parts.
The aim of the first part is to convince the reader that the random world begins directly in his or her own living room because, in fact, all modern life is based on probability. The first part is on the concept of probability and considers making decisions in conflict situations, optimizing queues, games, and the control of various processes, and doing random searches.

The second part of this text shows how fundamental chance is in nature using the probabilistic laws of modern physics and biology as examples. Elements of quantum mechanics are also involved, and this allows the author to demonstrate how probabilistic laws are basic to microscopic phenomena. The idea is that the reader, passing from the first part of the book to the second one, would see that probability is not only around us but it is at the basis of everything.

Translated from the Russian by Michael Burov First published 1988

Revised from the 1984 Russian edition.

This completely digital version typeset in using LaTeX with EB Garamond font.

PS: In this electronic edition all the figures have been reworked in the SVG format using Inkscape for a clearer presentation. I had started this project some years back, but did not pursue it to the finish. But it is finally here. I have checked a couple of times for typos or mistakes, but I am there might be some lurking here and there, so if you find any, please leave a comment.

Next in line Irodov’s Basic Laws of Electromagnetism (finished typesetting, only images need to be recreated) and Fundamental Laws of Mechanics.

You can get the book here. (File size 1.9 MB for the book!)

Convex Figures – Yaglom, Boltyanskii

In this post, we will see the book Convex Figures (Library of the Mathematical Circle-Volume 4) by I. M. Yaglom and V. G. Boltyanskii.

About the book

This book has been written for pupils of the higher classes in secondary schools and for students in the first semester of universities, as well as for all those who love mathematics. It can be used for study in mathematical work groups in secondary schools as well as universities. The presentation assumes nothing beyond high school mathematics, and the largest part of the book can be understood with the background acquired by the eighth grade in a secondary school. Moreover, we have striven in presenting the material to present even an inexperienced reader with as few difficulties as possible, although at some places, in the interest of ready comprehension, we were forced to give up complete rigor. We believe that all necessary steps toward precision can be carried out independently by any student in the middle semester in mathematics at a university or teachers college. To make this work easier, we introduce at the end of the book the rigorous definition of the concept of a plane figure as used in this book

Translated from the Russian by Paul J. Kelly and Lewis F. Walton
