About the book

The book is devoted to an urgent problem of modern gasdynamics – the com­putation of the flow field near a smooth body situated in an arbitrary manner with respect to the incident airflow. The book presents the results of in­vestigations performed over a period of several years by a group of authors associated with the development and practical application of the method of finite differences to the solution of three-dimensional problems of gas dynamics by electronic digital computer.
The first chapter presents in detail the method of the three-dimensional flow around tapered bodies in a supersonic flow. A series of sections in the first chapter presents the theoretical investigation of the system of finite difference equations carried out in the general form, taking into account the application of the method to other problems of mechanics and mathematical physics.
The second chapter presents the results of calculations for the non-axisymmetric flow around several bodies of revolution with and without account of chemical reaction in the flow.
The third chapter contains tables for the non-axisymmetric flow of circular cones in a wide range of Mach numbers, half cone angles, and angles of attack. The tables present exhaustive information concerning the gasflow and are con­ venient for practical applications.
The book is designed for scientific workers and engineers concerned with mathematical computations and computer programing, the aerodynamic design of flight craft and theoretical gasdynamics. The book may also be of use to teachers and students of upper classes in universities specializing in these fields.

This collection of problems was compiled for students and teachers at university level educational institutions. The theory of dis­crete mathematics is presented in Introduction to Discrete Math­ematics by S. Yablonsky.
G. Gavrilov is an associate professor at the Faculty of Com­putational Mathematics and Cy­bernetics at Moscow State Uni­versity. He has written a series of aids on discrete mathematics and mathematical logic, which have been published by Mos­ cow University Press and Nauka. His scientific interests cover dis­crete functional systems, graph theory, and mathematical logic. A. Sapozhenko is an associate professor in the same depart­ment. He specializes in dis­ crete mathematics and mathe­matical cybernetics. His main scientific interests are associated with the Boolean algebra, the minimization of Boolean func­tions, the random graphs, and the combinatorics of partially ordered sets.

Ce cours de mécanique des milieux continus est donc conçu dans l’esprit des indications précédentes. Il représente une version amplifiée du cours professé par l’auteur pendant plusieurs années à l’Université de Moscou et dont le texte existait primitivement en 1966-1968 sous forme polycopiée.
Le cours comprend deux tomes. Dans le premier tome sont exposées les méthodes mathématiques et les notions universelles, les bases de la thermodynamique et de l’électrodynamique. Nous espérons qu’un bref exposé des notions de base de ces disciplines sera utile non seulement aux lecteurs se spécialisant dans la méca­ nique. Dans le premier tome on établit également les fondamentales équations physiques et relations complémentaires aux fortes dis­ continuités, ainsi que les conditions initiales, les conditions aux limites et autres. En même temps on attire l’attention sur l’impor­ tance des méthodes approchées, ayant trait, par exemple, à la linéa­ risation des problèmes. C’est dire que le premier tome prépare les bases à la construction de modèles concrets des milieux continus et met en relief les éléments types des procédés de schématisation des problèmes posés.
On donne également en supplément au premier tome deux articles dont la matière est organiquement liée au sujet du cours. Le premier traite de la théorie générale de la symétrie dans l’espace tridimen­ sionnel, du problème de classification des cristaux à symétrie ponc­ tuelle et de la théorie de la structure des fonctions tensorielles non linéaires de plusieurs arguments tensoriels. Le second est un exposé systématique de la méthode générale de construction des modèles complexes des milieux continus à degrés de liberté intérieurs,, méthode basée sur l’équation variationnelle universelle.
Nous souhaitons que le lecteur prenne connaissance de ces arti­ cles, nécessaires à la lecture compétente d’ouvrages consacrés aux nouveaux théories et modèles de la mécanique des milieux continus.
Le second tome traite des modèles concrets et des théories de- l’hydrodynamique, de la dynamique des gaz, de l’élasticité et de la plasticité. On y résout les problèmes types dans le cadre des modèles, classiques et l’on y établit les régularités les plus importantes qu’on rencontre dans de vastes classes de mouvements et de processus.

About the authors

BORIS PAVLOV, Candidate of Pedagog­ical Sciences, is a well-known lectur­er in general, inorganic, and organic chemistry. He has written several valuable books on teaching methods is the author of the textbooks ORGANIC CHEMISTRY and INORGANIC CHEMISTRY for teachers’ colleges.

ALEXANDER TERENTYEV, Correspond­ing Member of the Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R., is Professor of Organic Chemistry at Moscow Univer­sity. The founder of the Soviet school of organic analysis, he has consider­ably enriched this field of chemistry with new reactions, techniques, and apparatus. His work in the sulphonation of organic compounds has won him the National Prize.

Alexander Terentyev is a leading authority on the stereochemistry of organic compounds. He is the author f a special course in the stereochem­istry of organic compounds, which has become part of the curriculum of the Department of Chemistry at Moscow University. His numerous books include THE STEREOCHEMISTRY OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS, CHEMICAL LITERATURE AND HOW TO USE IT, and ORGANIC CHEMISTRY. He has written more than 400 scientific papers, which cover a wide range of subjects in the fields of heterocyclic compounds, phys­iologically active substances, and complex compounds.

This book presents a coherent, comprehensive account of structural chemistry—a complex, but important area of modern chemistry. The authors, two outstanding Russian scientists, have furnished a well-balanced wave mechanical treatment of the field. Throughout the book, they have endeavored to link theoretical aspects with practical measurements so that the reader can properly grasp recent developments and problems.
The book begins with a general survey of atomic structure (covering the Rutherford- Bohr model, the developments of wave mechanics and its relation to periodic classi­ fication of the elements). The emergence of ideas on chemical binding is discussed, particularly in reference to covalency and resonance—using the Heitler-London atomic orbital method as a basis for the treatment. Chapters cover the homopolar bond (with an examination of the Pauli Principle), saturation and direction of valency bonds, resonance of valency structures, and resonance of covalent and ionic states.
The authors then take up the molecular orbital method and its application to diatomic and polyatomic molecules. They consider a number of highly significant topics: spec­ tral measurements, dipole moments, bond energies and intermolecular attraction; crystal structure and chemical binding; etc. An extensive account of complex com­ pounds follows. This chapter deals with metallic carbonyls, nitrosyl and nitro com­ pounds, cyanides, halogen compounds, and the like. Apart from the Heitler-London treatment of the homopolar bond, all mathematical derivations are postponed to three chapters at the end of the book. Thus, the non-mathematical reader with an average chemistry background can simply omit this final section and still be assured that he has a thoroughly sound introduction to the subject.
A great virtue of the book is that it brings together between the covers of a single volume a large amount of theoretical material and experimental data otherwise to be found only in scattered books and periodicals. And it presents this material in a form intelligible to a great many readers who would ordinarily be put off by the more advanced texts in which these topics are usually discussed. Practicing chemists and students will find this an exceptionally useful addition to their working libraries.
