In this book we will endeavor to demonstrate that although biochemical or photochemical reactions leading to the formation of products entering into the chemiluminescence reaction are not the same in different systems, the final stages of the process, ending with the luminescence of a quantum, have many features in common and only their comparison in a study of different systems
makes possible an understanding of many very important characteristics of the luminescence mechanism. In accordance with this idea the author has striven /4. not only to demonstrate the widespread occurrence of ultraweak luminescence in biological systems, but also most importantly to consider the biochemical reac­ tion mechanisms facilitating the process and the actual transformation of the chemical reaction energy into molecular excitational energy; in other words,
we have attempted to approach the problem of ultraweak luminescence from the biochemical and biophysical points of view.

Le présent manuel à l’usage des élèves des écoles pédagogiques supérieures est prévu pour l’étude de l’astronomie dans le cadre des programmes des disciplines physiques et mathématiques.
Comme toute science, l’astronomie envisage des lois et recherches fondamentales et des questions secondaires, moins importantes. Les futurs enseignants en physique et mathématiques, dont nom­ breux auront à professer l’astronomie, doivent posséder dans ce domaine des connaissances profondes. De ce fait, dans cet ouvrage l’attention est surtout portée sur le sens physique des phénomènes décrits de façon suffisamment détaillée.
Les auteurs sont persuadés qu’il n’est pas de rigueur pour les enseignants en physique, mathématiques et astronomie de connaître les constructions des instruments astronomiques nombreux et va­ riés, les astuces et finesses des méthodes de recherche astronomique, ainsi que les détails de ces recherches. Mais les principes et les résul­ tats fondamentaux issus de ces recherches, les méthodes et les moyens techniques modernes doivent leur être familiers, autrement ils au­ raient des idées fausses sur l ’astronomie moderne et ne pourraient pas établir ce qu’il y a de commun entre les manifestations terrestres et extraterrestres des lois de la Nature, et déceler les liens étroits existant entre elles.
Les auteurs se sont efforcés de s’en tenir aux vues modernes sur les méthodes de l’enseignement, qui rendent compte des relations entre les disciplines, d’autant plus qu’un cours d’astronomie est présenté aux élèves après le cours de physique générale qui donne une description détaillée de nombreux appareils employés en astro­ physique, y compris des filtres optiques à cannelure étroite, des photomultiplicateurs, des polarimètres, des interféromètres et des détecteurs des photons.
La radiotechnique étant enseignée aux étudiants avant ou en mê­ me temps qu’un cours d’astronomie, aucun besoin n’est de décrire les appareils de radio employés par elle; il faut seulement relever les
particularités du fonctionnement des radiotélescopes et des inter- féromètres radioastronomiques.
Toutefois, bien que les lois de la mécanique soient exposées par les cours de physique générale et de mécanique classique, leur appli­ cation en astronomie et leur vérification d’après les mouvements des corps célestes doivent être démontrées du fait que ces questions ne sont pas envisagées par d’autres sciences.
L’ouvrage donne une description sommaire des principes du service de l’heure où l’on emploie actuellement des étalons atomiques complexes, et cette partie constitutive de l’astronomie autrefois importante, est devenue de nos jours presque complètement du ressort de la physique et de la technique. Aujourd’hui les astronomes n’ont qu’à déterminer le temps sidéral, sans lequel il est impossible d’établir les positions apparentes des corps célestes et d’étudier les irrégularités dans la rotation de la Terre.
Les auteurs se sont bornés à n’exposer que les résultats stricte­ ment établis et ont rejeté les hypothèses à vie si courte, mais si nombreuses de nos jours, refutées parfois aussi vite qu’elles n’ont été énoncées. Ils ont entrepris la tentative de donner une description sommaire des problèmes philosophiques que pose l’astronomie moderne.

Cet ouvrage expose les principaux résultats de la théorie asymp­ totique des équations et systèmes d’équations différentielles ordi­ naires linéaires, relatifs au comportement des solutions des équa­ tions à petits paramètres en les dérivées supérieures et au comporte­ ment des solutions pour de grandes valeurs de l’argument. Bien que ces questions aient fait l’objet d’études nombreuses et éparses, les méthodes de démonstration sont à peu près du meme type, de sorte que le sujet traité s’inscrit bien dans le cadre d’une monogra­ phie genre aide-mémoire. Nous nous sommes bornés aux équations homogènes. La représentation asymptotique des solutions de l’équa­ tion non homogène se déduit de celle des solutions d’un système fon­ damental par les méthodes des estimations asymptotiques des inté­ grales.

Le lecteur peut s’initier à la notion de développement asympto­ tique qui est systématiquement utilisée dans cet ouvrage en consul­ tant les monographies [27, 371. Par «solution asymptotique for­ melle » on comprend une fonction satisfaisant l’équation avec un certain degré de précision. Même si cette notion est vague, sa signi­ fication ressort toujours clairement du contexte. Signalons encore que le terme « ligne de Stokes » équivaut ici au terme « ligne anti- Stokes » utilisé en physique.

If we examine an atomic explosion as a physical phenomenon, many problems arise In the analysis of the physical picture of the explosion. The present book Is devoted to the physics of the action of gamma radiation In atomic explosions. It is known that the damaging action of an atomic explosion includes, to a consider­ able extent, the radiation sickness due to the action of gamma rays and neutrons. We shall confine ourselves only to consideration of gamma rays, since they are the main factors that determine the damaging action. The action of the gamma radiation is determined by the magnitude of the so-called dose, i.e., the absorption of gamma-radiation energy.
The purpose of this book Is to estimate the dose of gamma radiation and to analyze the physical factors that influence Its magnitude.
The analysis is based on the results of the theory of multiple scattering (diffusion) of gamma quanta. A new factor in the theory is the influence of the shock wave on the propagation of gamma radiation, as noted by Ya. B. Zel’dovich and the author.
The calculations of the doses are referred to explosion energies of 20 megatons. This figure has no relation whatever to the present state of the art, and is chosen arbitrarily.
The problems that arise in the analysis of the physical picture of the action of the gamma radiation due to atomic explo­ sion are closely related to problems involving protection against gamma radiation, encountered in the atomic industry. Therefore the book can be useful for a wide circle of scientific workers and engineers interested in problems of shielding and the dosi­metry. The author has benefited from the interest and from
much advice by Ya. B. Zel’dovich, and expresses him great grati­tude.

This book is based on lectures delivered by the author in 1960 and 1961 at the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and at the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research. The book is meant for experimental physicists working in the field of elementary particles and high energies, and for young theoretical physicists specializing in this field.
The author has set himself two tasks: first, to make the reader familiar with the basic ideas and problems of the theory of the weak interaction of elementary particles; second, to make the reader familiar with the methods of calculation within the theory and to show him how the methods are to be applied.
The overall content of the book is concentrated about two pivotal hypotheses: the universality of the weak interaction, and the composite model of strongly interacting particles. These hypo­ theses allow the contents to be expounded in a more concise way and to retrace the connection between various problems in the theory of weak and strong interactions. Like every extrapolation, the hypotheses of the universality and of the composite model will undoubtedly be improved in the future and in part modified in the light of new experimental facts. In the form in which they are presented in the book, these hypotheses are to be considered as a “ zero approximation”.

Le présent recueil de problèmes sur la théorie des fonctions analytiques est destiné aux étudiants des facultés de mécanique-mathématiques et de physique des universités et des instituts pédagogiques, de même qu’aux étudiants des établissements d’enseignement supérieur à programme du cours de mathématiques élargi. The present work is a condensed version of one of the same title, published in 1937 in Russian and containing the first extensive treat­ ment of non-linear oscillations. Messrs. Andronow and Chaikin are both members of the Institute of Oscillations founded about a decade and a half ago by the late Soviet physicist L. I. Mandelstam. The work of this Institute has become known to the world at large through Dr. N. Minorsky’s Introduction to Non-Linear Mechanics recently issued by the David Taylor Model Basin. The great interest evoked by this excellent report provided a strong incentive for making available to the scientific and technical public the text of Andronow and Chaikin. This has been made possible with the aid of the Office of Naval Research as part of the project on Non-Linear Differential Equations which it is sponsoring at Princeton University.
The theory of harmonic oscillations, or oscillations of sinusoidal type, is well known. It is also quite elementary, since it is based upon linear differential equations whose explicit solutions are readily obtained. Unfortunately nature refuses to remain linear and repeat­ edly presents us with non-linear oscillations, that is to say with oscilla­ tions based upon non-linear differential equations. It is often possible to linearize a problem, i.e. to modify the operating assumptions so as to have a linear situation without causing important deviations. Thus the true equation of the pendulum is never linear, but for very small deviations (a few degrees) it may be satisfactorily replaced by a linear equation. In other words for small deviations the pendulum may be replaced by a harmonic oscillator. This ceases to hold however for large deviations, and in dealing with these one must consider the non-linear equation itself and not merely a linear substitute.
There are then valid practical reasons for an extensive study of non-linear oscillations. Since their equations rarely admit an explicit solution, one will be forced to have recourse to various mathematical doctrines to obtain all possible information. The text of this book aims precisely to provide an introduction to this general subject.
