The course in Russian folklore which is presented herewith is designed
for students of the literary faculties in institutions of higher
education. But, in view of the almost complete lack at the present
time of general works on folklore, I have so arranged the book that it
may be useful also for teachers, graduate students, and those who are
beginning scientific work. This will explain the presence of somewhat
voluminous bibliographical materials on the points which are dealt
with in the book. It will explain also the comprehensiveness of the
historiographic survey. It has been my wish that my book might serve
as a primary source of assistance for the independent scientific work
of young specialists.
