The Gambler by Fyodor Dostoevsky is a novella that delves into the themes of addiction, obsession, and human weakness. The story revolves around Alexei Ivanovich, a young tutor working for a Russian general’s family. Set in a fictional European town, Alexei becomes deeply entangled in the world of gambling, particularly at the roulette tables.
Alexei is infatuated with Polina, the general’s stepdaughter, who manipulates his feelings. As the narrative progresses, Alexei’s growing obsession with gambling reflects his inner turmoil and desperation, mirroring the self-destructive tendencies of other characters, including the general, who is also consumed by financial ruin. Through Alexei’s experiences, Dostoevsky explores the psychological depth of addiction and the broader social critique of the desire for wealth and status.
Dostoevsky, who himself struggled with gambling addiction, uses this work to portray the emotional highs and devastating lows of such compulsion.
Translated from the Russian by Constance Garnett.
