Plasma Turbulence – Kadomtsev

In this post, we will see the book Plasma Turbulence by B. B. Kadomtsev.

About the book

This book is a translation of a review by Academician B. B. Kadomtsev of the I. V. Kurchatov Institute, Moscow, which was written at my suggestion in order to have available in concise form the essence of the large body of papers on this difficult yet important subject. It was originally published in Russian in Volume 4 of “ Problems in Plasma Theory ”, edited by M. A. Leontovich (1964).
Academician Kadomtsev is a leading authority on plasma turbulence, and he and his colleagues have contributed many of the original papers on the subject. It is now well known that some form of turbulence is very frequently and often disastrously present in experiments on the confinement of hot plasma. It is not impossible that in the quest for a thermonuclear plasma we shall ultimately have to deal with a more or less turbulent state, and the understanding of this state is therefore important to nuclear fusion research. I believe this book will contribute greatly towards such an under standing and help to stimulate further work on the subject.
Translated from the Russian by L. C. Ronson

In this post, we will see the book High Frequency Properties Of Plasma
by K. D. Sinel’nikov ( Ed.).

About the book

These articles present the results derived from theoretical and experimental investigations of high frequency plasma properties: the methods of high fre quency plasma heating, propagation of electromagnetic
waves in a magnetoactive plasma, thermal radiation of
a plasma, and development of instabilities when employing high frequency methods of plasma heating. A description is provided of experimental equipment developed for high frequency heating and containment of a plasma.

This collection is designed for scientific researchers and engineers dealing with the problems of a plasma and its technical application, as well as for students and graduate students in the physics departments of universities and physical-technical institutes.

Zoology – Textbook for Schools – Naumov (Ed.)

In this post, we will see the book Zoology – Textbook for Schools edited by D. Naumov. The contributing authors are B. E. Bykhovsky; E. V. Kozlova; A. S. Monchadsky; D. V. Naumov; A. S. Sokolov; N. A. Rykov; P. V. Terentyev.

HOW TO USE THE TEXTBOOK

First get acquainted with the contents of the textbook. Some words in the text are printed in italics to make it easier to remember zoological terms. If the species of an animal is followed by an exclamation mark (‘), it means that this animal is rare and should be protected. On the margins of the book next to the questions and assignments you will see a red question mark (?), or a red triangle A, which means that the questions and assignments are given for review in order to remember the material better. If the assignment is marked by a red square , it should be accomplished by observing living animals, making experiments with them, or studying the structure of dissected animals.

Examine carefully the insides of the front and back covers of the textbook, where you will find reference data on zoology. An appendix is given at the end of the textbook, containing brief characteristics of the main phyla and classes of animals, as well as symbolic images of representatives of various classes. You will find the same images on the inside front cover, illustrating schematically the evolutionary trends of the main groups of the animal world. The index of main zoological terms indicates the pages where the terms are used.

Edited by D.Naumov
Translated from the Russian by M. Rosenberg
English translation edited by

Motion of Conducting Bodies in A Magnetic Field – Liyelpeter (Ed.)

In this post, we will see the book Motion Of Conducting Bodies In A Magnetic Field
edited by Ya. Ya. Liyelpeter.

About the book

This book represents a collection of articles on the theory of induction, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) machines with a liquid metal working medium, the electromagnetic processes in an ideal, conducting MHD machine, and the higher spatial harmonics of the magnetic field of an
induction MHD machine. It also discusses the transverse edge effect in plane, induction MHD machines, the longitudinal edge effect in linear MHD machines, the pondero-motive forces influencing conducting media in the traveling magnetic field of a cylindrical inductor, and a theory for the propagation of pulsed electromagnetic fields in moving, conductive media.

The book Dvizheniye provodyashchikh tel v magnitnom pole (Motion of Con ductive Bodies in a Magnetic Field) which we offer to the reader is a survey of
work on electromagnetic processes in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) induction ma chines (generators, pumps) with working media of liquid metal.
The topics in this collection touch on the theory of MHD machines examined from the so-called electrodynamic approach, i.e., disregarding the magnetohy drodynamic effects in the machine channel.
The surveys include most of the papers published on the problem in ques tion and several which were in the process of publication as the manuscript was being prepared for press; some original findings are also presented.
It is proposed in the immediate future to devote a separate work to a survey of magnetohydrodynamic phenomena in MHD induction machines.
Please send all requests and criticisms about the book to the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences, Latvian SSR at 19 Turgenev St., Riga.

Cosmonautics Present and Future – Levant

In this post, we will see the book Cosmonautics Present And Future by Leonid Levant.

About the book

This is a handbook on American cosmonautics based on foreign publications, particularly review articles contained in the yearbook, “Science and the Future,” published by the well known Encyclopedia Britannica.
The handbook will appeal to a wide circle of readers.

The present collection was compiled from material in foreign publications, in particular, the review articles on astronautics and space research taken from the ”Science and the Future” annual of the Encyclopedia Brittanica.
The collection consists of three basic headings: 1) launches of artificial Earth satellites; 2) flights of inter planetary space probes; and 3) flights of manned spacecraft.]
In itself, of course, the present collection can hardly pretend to present a complete picture, if only because of its brevity. However, in view of the tremendous interest in the forthcoming joint flights, the events and facts elucidated in this collection may help the reader to better understand the present state of American astronautics and some of the prospects for man’s further advances into space.

Measurement of Pulse Distortion in Digital Information Transmission – Brusilovskii

In this post, we will see the book Measurement Of Pulse Distribution In Digital Information Transmission by K. A. Brusillovskii.

About the book

This book, which should be regarded as an introduction to the extensive field of digital data transm ission quality m easurem ents, is intended to partially fill this gap. It deals with a selection of topics pertaining, first,
to some statistical features of distortion and error distributions in communication channels (mainly wires) and, second, to the design of appropriate
measuring instrum ents and their components. It is an outgrowth of the original research in which I and my co-workers have been engaged since 1958.
The book is divided into seven chapters. The first three chapters briefly discuss the criteria for the evaluation of noise proof features of communication channels and the elements of the statistical theory of signals, noises, distortions, and errors in digital data transmission. Some statistical error models encountered in the analysis of transmission over telephone lines are considered.
Chapter Four deals with the fundamental properties of test signals and the functional principles of test signal generators.
Chapters Five and Six discuss analog and digital distortion meters
and various error and distortion distribution analyzers. Because of space limitations, only those instruments are described which have been developed under my direction or with my active participation. Analyzers constitute an exception to this rule, because of their great significance
as the measuring instrument of the future in digital data transmission.
In distinction from the conventional testing equipment, the instruments described in this book are all built on the contemporary principle of non-contact solid-state switching elements, using semiconductor triodes (transistors) and ferrites.
In the concluding chapter various questions related to the optimum
design of a digital indicator register and a transistorized output relay are discussed. Again because of space limitations we had to omit descriptions of other component elements, discussion of the telegraph distortion terminology, instrumental errors, methods of reduction of experimental findings, and an analysis of the actual results obtained with the various testers described in the book. These topics, as well as descriptions of other similar instruments are covered by the references listed at the end of the book.

by A. S. Yakovlev.

About the book

This brief outline of the development of aircraft construction in the Soviet Union during the fifty years of Soviet power does not claim to be a comprehensive and profound analysis of the building up of the Soviet aircraft industry.
The author assumed a more limited task: to describe the main stages
in the progress of aircraft construction by showing the technical growth of scientific and design thinking of Soviet designers from the October Revolution to the present.

The book was translated from Russian by E. Vilim under Israel Program for Scientific Translations was published in 1970 by NASA Technical Translations.
