Abai by Mukhtar Auezov

PROGRESS SOVIET AUTHORS LIBRARY

“Abai—the all-seeing eye,
the responsive heart,
Abai—the wisdom of the people… Together with Abai, I tried to fathom the soul of the Kazakh people and reveal it in its finest manifestations. The passionate impulses of the boy Abai, the thoughts and actions of the grown Abai, the struggle and drama of Abai the teacher and defender of the people in his advanced years—all this taken together had to give me the key to the soul of our nation in his day and age.”

This is what Mukhtar Auezov says about his work on the epic novel Abai, dedicated to the great Kazakh poet and enlightener Abai Kunanbayev.

Mukhtar Auezov (1897-1961), an outstanding Soviet Kazakh writer, academician, and prominent public figure, himself came from the Kunanbai clan. And when writing this book about the classic of Kazakh literature, Auezov drew on facts, recollections, and legends about Abai, treasured by the family.

The author has been awarded a Lenin Prize for this novel.
