On Literature And Art by Anatoly Lunacharsky

Anatoly Lunacharsky, a highly versatile and talented figure, left an impressive intellectual legacy. As Lenin described him, he was an “exceptionally gifted personality.” Lunacharsky’s creative pursuits spanned across literature, painting, music, and sculpture, producing over 1,500 articles on both classical and contemporary art forms. His extensive contributions included lectures on Russian and European literature, essays on literary and aesthetic theory, and papers on modern art and politics. His works, which appeared frequently in the 1920s and 1930s, significantly shaped Soviet cultural life. This collection offers a glimpse into his critical works, highlighting his role as a theorist and critic of both Russian and foreign art. It provides insight into his broad cultural interests and his personal approach to criticism, though it represents only a small fraction of his extensive output.
