Crystal Physics by G. S. Zhdanov

In this post, we will see the book Crystal Physics by G. S. Zhdanov.

About the book

One of the purposes of writing this book was to make a more comprehensive collection of data on the atomic and electron structure of matter and the forces of interatomic and intermolecular interaction than is available in most textbooks and monographs on solid state physics. In this, the author was helped by having been for a long time in charge of the crystal structure laboratory at the Karpov Physico-chemical Institute. Undoubtedly, the attitude to scientific enquiry of this laboratory has left its stamp on the book as a whole.

The nucleus of the book consisted of notes for lectures on solid state physics given by the author from 1948 onwards, at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute to students specializing in the physics of metals, and from 1954 onwards in Moscow University to students in the Solid State Department of the Physics Faculty. Some chapters have problems appended, and in the appendix specimen seminar questions are given with the object of drawing the attention of students to individual problems in the course. As regards the great volume of material embraced by solid state physics, not all its divisions could be adequately treated. The book is provided with a bibliography of monographs, and also a partial bibliography of recent articles, with the aim of enabling anyone to broaden his knowledge if he becomes interested in questions which are treated in a very condensed manner in the book.

Accelerators Of Charged Particles by B. S. Ratner

In this post, we will see the book Accelerators Of Charged Particles by B. S. Ratner.

About the book

This book sets out in easily comprehensible form both the history and the latest achieve ments of accelerator technology, explains the fundamental principles on which accelerators work, and gives the necessary information about the structure of the atom and the atomic nucleus and the main types of nuclear reac tion. It is intended for a wide reading public which has no specialized training.

Agrarian Reforms In India by G. Kotovsky

In this post, we will see the book Agrarian Reforms In India by G. Kotovsky.

About the book

This book was completed in the spring of 1959. Naturally, therefore, the characterization of the agrarian reforms in India given in it applied to the situation as it obtained at the close of 1958.

In the three years that have passed since then, the agrarian reforms and the struggle waged around them have further developed. The author had access to many new materials, particularly as a result of his visit to India in January-February 1961 under the scientific exchange arrangements between the USSR Academy of Sciences and the Indian Statistical Institute. New analyses of the agrarian reforms underway in India have appeared in the Soviet Union and other countries and, in particular, in India. All of this has made it necessary to revise some parts of the text for the English edition and to add some new material.

Indian readers should bear in mind that the Russian edition was meant mainly for readers little familiar with the agrarian structure of modern India, and while explanations of different terms have been omitted from the translation, some details and explanations still remain in the text which may appear superfluous to Indian readers.

The author wishes to take this opportunity to express his gratitude to the Institute of the Peoples of Asia of the USSR Academy of Sciences and the Oriental Languages Publishing House for undertaking the translation of the work into English and the People’s Publishing House for undertaking its publication. He also wishes to thank all colleagues who have promoted the translation and publication of the work. The author hopes that the publication of the book in English would further Soviet-Indian scientific cooperation and serve, to some extent at least, as a contribution to the wide theoretical discussion going on around the problem of agrarian reforms in India.

Successive Approximation ( Popular Lectures In Mathematics 15) by N. Ya. Vilenkin

In this post, we will see the book Successive Approximation ( Popular Lectures In Mathematics 15) by N. Ya. Vilenkin.

About the book

The primary aim of this booklet is to present a number of methods for the approximate solution of equations. Their practical value is indisputable, yet they are little studied in high school or college. It will often happen, therefore, that someone who may even have majored in mathematics will find it difficult to solve the simplest of transcendental equations. Not only engineers but other specialists need to solve equations, and familiarity with methods of the approximate solution of equations is useful for the high school and college student.

Since most of the methods for the approximate solution of equations are connected with the concept of the derivative, we have found it necessary to introduce this concept. We have based our treatment on an appeal to geometry, however. The reader, therefore, needs no more background than is provided by high school mathematics.

In compiling this book, the author made use of a lecture he gave to ninth- and tenth-grade students in the school mathematics circle at Moscow State University. The content of this lecture was adopted by S. I. Shvartsburd, a Moscow high school teacher, for work outside class hours with his ninth-grade pupils. The author thanks him for his solutions to some of the problems used for this book.

The author expresses his deep gratitude to V. G. Boltyanskii, whose suggestions improved the first version of the manuscript.

Higher Mathematics ( Part 1) – for Engineering Students Part 1. Linear Algebra and Fundamentals of Mathematical Analysis by A. V. Efimov; B. P. Demidovich

In this post, we will see the book Higher Mathematics ( Part 1) – for Engineering Students Part 1. Linear Algebra and Fundamentals of Mathematical Analysis by A. V. Efimov; B. P. Demidovich.

About the book

The idea of designing this three-part problem book belongs to Professor B. Demidovich, but his early death prevented him from putting it into practice. The book was prepared by a group of us, some of whom have had long pedagogical experience lecturing higher mathematics to engineering students. We have tried to do our best to develop and realize the ideas and plans of the late Professor Demidovich.

The problems contained in the book cover all the branches of higher mathematics studied by engineering students. In addition, our problem book includes a number of problems that will enable the reader to repeat the main topics of mathematical analysis and vector algebra from his school course, studying them more carefully.

The present book (Part 1) entitled “Linear Algebra and Fundamentals of Mathematical Analysis” consists of seven chapters (1 to 7) and includes the topics which, as a rule, are studied during the first two semesters of the course. Among them are: vector algebra with elements of analytical geometry, linear algebra, and also differential calculus of functions of one and several variables, and integral calculus of functions of one variable.

Each chapter is supplied with answers to all the computational problems. The answers are given at the end of each chapter. Those problems marked with an * are provided with hints and the ones with **, with solutions to be found with answers.

Each section in all chapters is supplied with a brief introduction containing both the relevant theoretical material (definitions, formulas, and theorems) and a plenty of thoroughly worked examples.

Leningrad Does Not Surrender by N. Kislitsyn; V. Zubakov

In this post, we will see the book Leningrad Does Not Surrender by N. Kislitsyn; V. Zubakov.

About the book

During the Second World War, the city of Leningrad fought an epic battle, a battle unprecedented in length and resistance put up by the defenders. The enemy’s objective was to take the city whatever the cost. Furious attacks, repeated attempts to surround the city, and the siege were all intended to break the stubborn resistance and burst into Leningrad. But neither the enemy’s furious pressure nor the cold, nor the hunger, nor the continuous shelling and aerial bombardment could shake the will of its defenders, who had turned the city into an impregnable fortress.

Inside Leningrad, factories worked day and night to produce weapons and everything else necessary for the front, and despite the bombing and shelling, its people did all they could to build up defenses. Each house became a stronghold, and every citizen knew his battle place.

The battle was waged on land, on water, and in the air, under the sweltering heat of summer, in the rains of autumn, and in the long blizzards and frosts of winter. The people suffered incredible hardships, but they built up their strength and finally defeated the enemy who, for nine hundred days, had tried to strangle Leningrad in the ring of blockade.

The defense of Leningrad is an incomparable example of human courage, mass heroism, steadfastness, and selfless patriotism.

Translated from the Russian by Barry Jones Designed by Andrei Razumov

The book was published in 1989 by Progress Publishers.
