Foundations Of The Theory Of Plasticity by L. M. Kachanov

In this post, we will see the book Foundations Of The Theory Of Plasticity by L. M. Kachanov.

About the book

This book is based on lectures on the theory of plasticity delivered by the author at the Mechanics-Mathematics Faculty of the University of Leningrad. The author has not attempted to provide an exhaustive treatment of the entire theory of plasticity. The book primarily focuses on the plastic deformation of metals at normal temperatures, particularly in relation to questions of the strength of machines and structures. Its main objective is to offer a straightforward explanation of the fundamental equations of plasticity theory and the most well-developed methods for solving them, as well as to discuss issues characterizing the special nature of the plastic state and the variety of mechanical problems involved.

The second edition has undergone significant revisions to reflect important developments in the theory in recent years. More emphasis has been placed on yield surfaces and the associated yield law, and the chapters on plane stress and the axisymmetric problem have been expanded. The section on extremum principles and energetic methods of solution has been extensively rewritten. Additionally, a new chapter on the theory of shakedown, which is significant in understanding the role of varying loads in the onset of rupture, has been included. Progress in the model of a rigid-plastic body in dynamic problems over the last decade has led to some additions in Chapter XI.

To prevent the course from being overloaded with unnecessary details, some of the more difficult problems have been omitted from the second edition, and the chapters on the stability of equilibrium and composite plastic media have been abbreviated.

It is assumed that the reader is acquainted with the basic concepts of strength of materials and the theory of elasticity. To facilitate study, passages that may be omitted on first reading have been indicated in small type or marked with asterisks.

The list of references is not exhaustive. Special lists are provided to assist in navigating the extensive literature on the theory of plasticity, which includes books and review articles containing supplementary references.

The author acknowledges readers who pointed out defects in the first edition and expresses gratitude to A.A. Vakulenko, A.I. Kuznetsov, V.I. Rozenblyum, and G.S. Shapiro for their valuable comments on the manuscript. A.I. Kuznetsov also reviewed the proofs, and the author extends sincere thanks to him for a number of important corrections.

Translation from the second revised edition into English was provided by Multilingua Scientific Translations.
