Mumu is a short story by Ivan Turgenev that explores themes of oppression, power, and the struggles of the lower class in 19th-century Russia. It follows Gerasim, a deaf and mute serf with great physical strength but a gentle heart, who serves a wealthy and capricious old lady. He rescues and cares for a small dog he names Mumu, forming a deep bond with it. However, when his mistress orders the dog to be removed because its barking irritates her, Gerasim is forced to drown Mumu in the river, symbolising his helplessness under the rigid social hierarchy. After this tragic act, he abandons his service and returns to his village, making a silent but defiant escape from his oppressive life.
