Update: Books in Comments

It has been a while since anything new was posted by me. But many good natured people have invested their time and efforts to keep the book coming. This post is for bringing forth those contributions and contributors. Chances are that many might not know about these books as the links were posted in comments of various other posts. Hence this short post. Detailed posts with contents, info etc. will follow later. And please do add more links. Apologies for mistakes and omissions, please let me know if I have missed any.

      Use only above method as Libgen.org method fails
      I myself found “Libgen.info” download method as the best. Other methods & their links break during downloading & have wasted my 1 hour today

        Another method is to use wget command. For this get the md5 sum of the file. For example in above file the md5=6fa3fb956a0b0d849f52a8c0bb4c3f2e Once this is there you can get the file using wget from terminal.
        In terminal type the following:

        wget -c http://libgen.org/get.php?md5=6fa3fb956a0b0d849f52a8c0bb4c3f2e

        the -c option makes sure that it will download the file where it left it. For example if your connection broke at 52%, running the above command again will start the download from 52% onwards.

        Another option is to make a file which has all these links. one on each line. Then use wget command to get them sequentially. This way you can leave the connection on for many days till all the files are downloaded.

        For this use:

        wget -ci filename

        Where filename is the file where you have links stored.

          I just bought Vygodsky Higher Mathematical Handbook (in English) on ebay for $12. Here’s a description:

          “This advanced Mathematics Handbook was first published in the Soviet Union in 1971.
          The title is Mathematical Handbook: Higher Mathematics. The book is published by Mir.
          This is the fourth printing, dated 1984. Written by N. Vygodsky, and translated into
          English by George Yankovsky. It is a very thick book with 872 pages. ”

          I would like to somehow share this book with everyone on this site with your help.

            Lastly, some more things I wanted to know :

            1) Is your scanner not working?
            2) What problems you are facing in scanner?
            3) What is its manufacturer name & model no.?

            [ I think even flatbed document scanners with lid (which are quite cheap) are sufficient for scanning. Only thing you need is resolution of scanned image (atleast 300 dpi). I have myself scanned using only flatbed scanner & not experienced any major issue ]

        Sorry for late reply.

        The FileCloud website is not trustable anymore & I seriously advise anyone neither to upload books on that website nor to depend on that website for downloading.
        The reason being they have deleted many of the books uploaded by me without notifying me. When I asked them, they said that they regularly delete those files which are downloaded less frequently. I admit that uploading books on FileCloud website was a complete waste of time & efforts.

        Just compare what happened when I logged on to my FileCloud account after intervals of a month each:
        no. of files uploaded =159 as on 2nd january 2015 at 01:00 am
        no. of files uploaded = 95 as on 6th march 2015 at 3:00 am
        no. of files uploaded = 83 as on 11th april 2015 at 1:30 am
        (the above numbers include the scientific books from Digital Library of India)

        Now, coming to those 15 books scanned by me, I will be uploading them on Google Drive like I did some days earlier for the humanities & science books scanned by Digital Library of India.

        But, there is one problem. I have found some errors in 3 of those 15 books. So, it will take a week’s time to upload all of them.

      Yes, I found many of them.
      There’s some problem while doing OCR

      Regarding huge size of page 49, it is a post-processing mistake by me.

      So, I will upload version 2 of this book possible after 10 days as cuurently I am making 2 e-books.
      Please remind me after 10 days if I don’t upload it?

      Also, if you have some spare time, can you check all the books uploaded by me & report me the mistakes/errors in the e-book?

          The Soviet books which I am scanning are only in English. In India I haven’t found any Spanish Soviet title yet.
          Yes, you are right- besides Russian & English, I think the no. of translated Soviet titles are much in Spanish & French as compared to Arabic, Portuguese, Hindi,Telugu, Marathi & other Indian languages

    1. The Page 124 is upside down with Black patch on the figure
    2. The Page 125 fig 3.3 Black Patch
    3. Page 186 fig 7.4 same problem

      The OCR works strangely wrong; gives black patches on many images but not all.
      I will upload version 2 of this book & Mukhin’s “statics of structures” book within tomorrow.
      Also, it would be great if you can check such errors in the book no.1 to 10 uploaded by me.

    What you people have done should deserves a highly appreciation from every one who need to enrich and strengthen his or her basic knowledge by a fine collection of books of MIR. I myself enjoyed excellent references during my study to which I consulted both in math, probability and statistics, in optimal control, in math-physics, and electromagnetism.
    However I know also that the MIR book collection that you work on now can still be enlarged by other MIR books in French, Spanish, and perhaps German.
    I am just wondering if you guys could contact the MIR Publisher itself and inquiry whether or not it still keep those above said collection. Otherwise weay expect that people

        I had just asked whether to upload or not because uploading these 160+110 books will not take more than, say, one week, whereas uploading a single book scanned by me will take atleast 3-4 days on average.

        Hi Immanuel, sorry for very late reply! Actually, there’s some Internet connection problem at my home

        I download books from “dli.ernet.in” using softwares which are available on Internet, just google search ——->DLI downloader

        You can use any one of those softwares compatible to your computer OS. After installing the software, when you run it, it will ask for barcode of the book (not actual ISBN but barcode of scanned book as given on DLI website)

        E.g. the barcode of the book “Introductory Engineering Electromagnetics”, by Branko Popovic is 99999990327147
        It will then download whole book as PDF.

        Had I downloaded each book page by page, it would have taken me almost 1 month per book!

        Hope this solves your query

      Are you scanning in colour mode or grayscale or black and white? Do scan in 300 dpi grayscale and use tiff files as output. Even though the initial file size is large, after processing through scan tailor the file size reduces considerably even after upscaling to 600 dpi.

      Actually,there are 2 different books on this topic by krasnov. You can buy them from Amazon.com though they are very very costly ($ 403 for just 231 pages)

      Even Amazon.com is not showing any such book to be sold.
      But, there’s only one edition (1986) of this book. You can check it on WorldCat.org website.
      There is one more book by same author “Mathematical formulas : algebra, geometry, mathematical analysis”
      I will try my best to search for these titles.

    can anyone help me in tracing the eBook versions of the series ‘international series of monographs in natural philosophy’ (published by pergamon press). many of the books in the series are written by the scholars of USSR academy of sciences. I searched on amazon.com, but there are only over expensive second hand copies available over there. since pergamon was acquired by elsevier back in the 90’s, i also happened to visit their homepage only to find out that the books are out of print and they are selling the archived copies where you require to buy each chapter of a particular volume separately at an astronomical rate of 31 USD per chapter (there are some 121 volumes in this series). Also archive.org, dli.ernet.in and torrent sites were of no help.

    can anyone please suggest something helpful?

      Sorry for late reply, but I have already scanned Polyakov’s “Design of Earthquake Resistant Structures” (1985 edition). You don’t need to scan that. Instead, can you take some snapshots of covers and first 4-5 pages inside & send me so that if you have some different covers than mine, they can be uploaded?

        My next book I am gonna scan is the following:

        Mathematical handbook; higher mathematics. Translated from the Russian by George Yankovsky. Hardcover – 1975 by M. (George Yankovsky, tr.) Vygodsky

        This should be done in less than a week…I know we already have the author’s Mathematical Handbook Elementary Mathematics.

        I am also gonna plan to buy the Physics – A General Course (3 Volume Set) by Savelyev, I.V. (4 total). I would like to raise on some money to get these as they are very expensive – $220 plus total. A few dollars a person could go a long way…

      Here’s a good idea: Lets create a new email address and then use it to get a free dropbox account (free). Then upload all files to a folder that can be shared with anyone. You don’t need passwords for the individual files which will make it easy for everyone. All we need is an email and a password. So its like a community upload area.

      Hi Siddharth,

      First of all thanks for all the effort you put on to make all these books digital 🙂 And about your concern.
      As you mentioned the filecloud server is deleting some files without any warning or notice, we also faced the same some times back.
      Now we are depending on archive.org and 4 shared. Most of the old links were dead(which were in filecloud) and we replaced it with either 4shared or archive.org links.
      Me and damitr had a discussion about this and we are working on it to find a good solution, but for now
      we can give an access to a folder in our mirtitle google drive where you can upload ,edit and share those files(Share your email so I can sent you an invitation).

      In future,
      We are planning to move all the files in a single repository which we are considering these options
      1. Google drive (but have a limit of 15 gb)
      2. Microsoft One drive (-do-)
      3. archive.org (High priority in our list)
      4. Some other file sharing providers (can’t believe them due to SOPA PIPA DMCA and the list goes on…….)
      5. A dedicated FTP server (Costly 😦 ..)

      Right now we have a small collection in archive.org which is a nice platform for this books and available in multiple format and has no size constraint! Any way moving the whole repo to
      another is a pain in the ass which will take some time. Before that if anyone have any suggestions or opinions please let us know.

        Thanks for help. I today got following email reply from filecloud.io :
        “If you do not have a premium account then files that have no downloads by anyone are removed after a few months of inactivity”
        Clearly, all our time uploading the books on filecloud was a big wastage since the files could be deleted any time, even when they have provided infinite GB space for public files.
        I wonder how can Filecloud claim itself to be “free & secure cloud service”!

        Now, about alternatives.
        Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive – all have a limit of 15 or 16 GB
        4shared needs account sign up and login even for downloading of files
        FTP is also costly, I agree. But if possible in future, then it will most preferred one.
        Torrent option has the drawback that seeding is always required
        Archive.org is a better alternative according to me also till the time we get a separate specialised server for e-books.

        I have some questions:
        1) Can Dropbox , Google Drive, Microsoft Drive, Archive.org also delete our files without our permission? Which is the best? What are your views? I also welcome suggestions of everyone here regarding this?
        2) Mirtitles Google Drive option is also a nice one besides Archive.
        Is only Gmail ID allowed to be given invitation to join that group?
        3) Should we include the Soviet humanities books in the Google Drive?

          About your queries,
          1. Archive.org , but if we have a dedicated server for storing files much better, even archive.org can delete files if they found it have anything to do with the copyrights!
          2. I hope so 🙂
          3. You can create a new folder in it and separate those so we can easily manage it.

    I think we should just use Dropbox and after sometime we can take down the files (after a month or so) to make room for new ones. Its free and its plenty big enough for a few files. Also, why don’t we come up with a list of books we don’t have so we know which books we don’t have. We could put in a editable Microsoft word document that be be changed periodically to reflect books we have gotten/new ones we want. Also, it would a good idea to collect donations from people who follow this site (a few dollars per follower of this site) so that we can buy rare books we want and then they can be scanned and uploaded for these people to use. I am planning on buying the following:
    Physics – A General Course (3 Volume Set) by Savelyev, I.V. and its associated Questions and Problems in General Physics by Savelyev, Igor V. which are some of the best mir physics books.

    Let me know your thoughts.

      Damitr regularly makes a post titled “Taking Stock” in which books not available are listed, but it has been quite a long time the “Taking Stock” was updated. Just Search “Taking Stock” & you will find some posts related to that

      2) About donations: I think it is a very nice idea to collect donations for buying the rare books. Lets wait for Damitr’s response on this.

      3) About Dropbox: I am thinking of uploading Humanities books in Dropbox and scientific books in Google Drive. In this way, we can test both these file sharing websites

      My suggestion:
      On the right side of this website, you can see “Blogroll : I Collect Soviet Books” below “Recent Posts”, “Entries RSS” and “Comments RSS”.

      I request Damitr to add following list also to the Blogroll so that we can have links of Soviet books in other regional languages also:

They are ‘newer,’ in the sense that they have been published, I believe, during Soviet Union’s final years – so they may not be as famous as the well-known classics of Mir.     Finally, to rectify the problems created by FileCloud website, I have uploaded all the Soviet scientific books (which were scanned by ‘Digital Library of India’) on the Google Drive.

    I have created a folder titled “Soviet-era Scientific Books scanned by Digital Library of India” and the books by different publishers have been put in different sub-folders.
