Science for Everyone – Semiconductors Made Simple

In continuing our roll of Science for Everyone series, we now come to book by A. M. Polyakov titled Semiconductors Made Simple.

The back cover of the book says:

Semiconductors have made an enormous impact on 20th century science and technology. This is because components made from semiconductors have very favourable properties such as low energy consumption, compactness, and high reliability, and so they now dominate electronics and radio engineering. Semiconductors are indispensable for space exploration and where the requirements of small size, low weight and low energy consumption are especially stringent.

The book uses quantum-mechanical concepts and band theory to present the theory of semiconductors in a comprehensible for. It also describes how basic semiconductor devices (e.g. diodes, transistors, and lasers) operate. The book was written for senior high-school students interested in physics.

The book was translated from the Russian by Natasha Deineko and was first published by Mir in 1985.

    I just want to know whether there are physics problem books better than irodov and krotov which were published by mir publishers but are not so known in india…………….Also mir publishers exists even today but is now privatised and without communist propaganda.Here, is their official site (in russian) http://www.mir-publishers.ru/

      Yes there are many “Problem Books” in Physics, which are there apart from Krotov and Irodov. These ones became famous maybe because of the availability and Indian reprints. The other books were not so fortunate for Indian reprints. The books that I know of personally and have solved through some of them are as under:

      Elementary Physics – Gurskii
      Problems in Theoretical Mechanics – Merschersky [this is at higher level maybe M.Sc.]
      Collection of Questions and Problems in Physics – L. A. Sena
      Problems in Elementary Physics – Zubov and Shalnov
      Elementary Physics Problems and Solutions – Bukhovtsev et. al.
      Problems in Physics – Pinksy
      Problems in Theoretical Physics – Grechko et. al [this is the problem book for the Theoretical Physics course by Landau and Lifshitz and is rare]

      Apart from this there are many other Problem Books in different and specialized subjects like Electrical Machines, Hydrodynamics, and many in Mathematics.

      As to say which is better one cannot really make such statements, as I found different books their contents and styles useful in different ways.

    My dad contacted the russian embassy and they have confirmed the existence of mir publishers…………they say that Irodov had prepared a full general course in physics consisting of about 10 books before his death in 2002…….. three or so books of his have been publshed in india……i have ordered the book mentioned in my previous comment from a Danish publishing house and it costs 36 dollars.
